"Hmph." Gokudera shook his glass, gesturing for Yamamoto to pour him some more. "Because he's too nice, he gets bullied by people. Everyone should appreciate how great he is. But even boss himself doesn't recognize that..."

He turned to look sideways at Yamamoto. "Baseball again, huh. You really love that sport. Why did you even take up writing? You could have joined the league."

[ooc: gokudera doesn't know of yamamoto's past, methinks? ^^;]

Yamamoto took the hint and poured him another glass of sake, but he also piled on more sushi on the other man's plate as well. "Well, that's why he has us, we can prevent that sort of thing. And Tsuna will get it eventually."

Inwardly he winced when Gokudera asked about baseball though he kept his cherry smile outwardly. Even after all this time, it was still a bit of a sore spot with him. "Major league baseball? Ehh..I'm not that good at it...and there are other reasons as well..."

Gokudera muttered a thanks as he sipped more sake and took another sushi off the plate. He had to agree (albeit silently) with what Yamamoto said. They had to take care of the boss until he realizes his own potential.

There was a flash of something in Yamamoto's eyes when Gokudera asked him about baseball. Gokudera knew he didn't imagine it, but he didn't know what was it. Sadness? Regret? Fury? He decided not to chase after it. He still didn't know what kind of emotions Yamamoto hid beneath his smiling face. Trying to change the topic, he ran a hand through his hair.

"Ahhh...I feel a little drunk. I think I need a smoke."

Yamamoto refilled his own cup of tea and got off the chair, glad that Gokudera changed the topic. That situation wasn't something he cared to discuss in public, or to be honest, at all.

He shook his head at Gokudera, his usual smile still on his face. "Well, let's go outside then. No smoking in the restaurant."

Tsuna had been bidding the Very Important People in his party, the business associates off when he saw them. Gokudera and Yamamoto, shoulder to shoulder, in his direction. He pressed a smile on his lips and waited for them at the porch of Takesushi. It didn't take him long to realise that Gokudera, like Colonello was on the brink of getting drunk. Giving the other a cursory gaze, he accessed if it was wise to let the other stay on.

"Are you leaving with Yamamoto, Gokudera-kun?" Tsuna asked, slowly, purposefully. That would make sense, he thought. Yamamoto would make sure Gokudera got home without talking to trees on side walks or hurling highlighters at invisible manuscripts. The thought made him feel... confused?

Gokudera stood up and swayed a little as he obtained his balance. Really, Yamamoto's stuff is strong. He usually could take a few more swigs before feeling tipsy. "Okay," he muttered as they walked towards the exit.

The boss was there; it looked like he took some people to the door. He asked them if they were leaving, and Gokudera was somewhat surprised. Did the boss think he'd leave in the middle of the party without making sure the boss was okay?

"N-no, boss," he said, rubbing his head. "I'm just going out for a smoke. I think I drank too much." He jammed a finger on his companion's chest. "He's tagging along."

Yamamoto grabbed Gokudera's elbow as the other swayed a bit on their way out. He shook his head, the other really did drink too much. "I should have warned you guys about the sake. It's strong stuff."

He gave Tsuna a smile as they stopped by the doorway out. "Hey, Tsuna~ Yeah, I'm making sure Gokudera-kun doesn't fall over flat on his face. You want to come along?"

Tsuna spied a look at the dying party indoors. All that was left were the stragglers and some Vongola employees he was closer to. But it wouldn't do for the host to leave, Tsuna knew better, so he shook his head at Yamamoto.

How did one test if one was sober? Tsuna had not much experience with drunks. He reached out to press a hand on Gokudera's cheek but decided against it, instead waved his hand before the half Italian to see if those green eyes focused. "Are you sure? You look... a little stoned," he asked, concerned.

"You fucking idiot," Gokudera muttered to the baseball nut as he leaned against him to regain his balance. He didn't want the boss to see him smoking and letting his drunkenness evaporate. During those times, he felt really vulnerable, almost his lowest (or angriest, depending on what situation he was in). He didn't want the boss to see him leaning against a building, breathing out smoke circles one after the other with a dazed look on his face.

"M-Maybe I can manage this alone," Gokudera said, addressing the boss as he walked. He took a few steps and slumped against the doorway. "I-I'll be back before you know it..."

"You ARE drunk, Gokudera-kun. Anybody can see that with the way you walk." Yamamoto replied back and hurriedly went to steady Gokudera with a hand on the elbow again. "And we all know you smoke. You really should cut down on the smoking too, it's bad for you."

At this, Yamamoto gave a glance back at Tsuna, as if asking for backup on his words.

Tsuna saw the look Yamamoto was giving him and felt his blood turn cold. He could feel it a mile away, the despondent cloud of doom hanging over the silver hairs of Gokudera. For a moment he wondered if Yamamoto's way of consolation will work. Probably not, he decided. Knowing how defensive Gokudera was, this method might not be the best to yield the right results, Tsuna thought. Reaching out, he placed his hand on Yamamoto's shoulder to hold him back and pressed the other hand on the back of Gokudera's hand, not letting him vent it out on nicotine. The brunette didn't like smoking but it was Gokudera and Tsuna allowed himself to get used to it. With as much gentleness he could muster, he half-smiled at them, eyes crinkling. "We got your back Gokudera-kun. You don't have to be alone." We're friends right?

Gokudera was about to slide in a rude comment for Yamamoto when the boss stepped closer and placed a hand over his own. Gokudera was surprised for a moment, wondering why the boss had such a gentle look in his eyes.

"B-Boss, what are you talking about?" he laughed, moving away from his boss. "I'm fine! I...I just need to be sober before going home, haha!" He stepped away and stumbled as he gingerly took a step backwards. "Ah...Baseball nut, your house is tilting, it's weird."

Yamamoto quickly steadied Gokudera again and shifted him so that he was upright instead of looking like he was about to fall over.

"My house is fine, Gokudera-kun. You're definitely drunk if you think the restaurant is tilting. I think we better get you home to sleep it off."

Tsuna bit back a sigh. It was heartbreaking to watch. Denial was something he was strangely acquainted with and this... he was sure was a classic case of one. But if Gokudera didn't want to face it now, Tsuna wasn't one to force it. He would back off and wait, wait until he was ready to talk... unless it would hurt them, then he would step in. Yes, that's it, he decided inwardly, stretching out his hand to sling the half Italian's arm over his shoulder. Giving Yamamoto a grateful look, he asked the other for a favor.

"Do you think you could inform my secretary and PA that we're going and to apologize for our absence?" He turned to his editor and peered in all of seriousness. "Gokudera-kun, can you walk? I can't drag you home on my own."

"I can walk, Boss!" Gokudera tried waving his boss away. "I'll be fine so go enjoy your party." He was a little woozy now, stupid Yamamoto didn't tell him the sake was this strong, but he didn't want to disturb his own boss.

"I'm really fine," he muttered as he was made to lean against the boss.
