Winter is a bad season for my sleeping, but usually, it doesn't hit me until January. This year, it's come early. I'm already having some nights when I bolt wide-awake hours before it's time to get up. Ugh. Ironically, for my first two winters at this address, bad sleeping didn't really bother me. I did lose sleep, but after our neighbor's house fire, I got very paranoid for a looong time and thought it was good to lie awake in bed for hours listening for the flames that I was always convinced were about to start.
Athena and her kids came over last weekend for an early Christmas celebration, and we all really enoyed it. They helped us decorate our tree and opened a few small, simple gifts (some books and a Play-Doh kit that Lydia tried to eat, because I despise extravagant gift-giving, even with kids). I even put some Christmas music on our new music channel, and ordinarily, Sara and I both hate Christmas music, but with Abram and Lydia around, it was hard to hear anything else. Abram and I played frisbee in the backyard and he taught me how to "dab." Since our backyard is always covered in leaves at this time of year, we buried Abram under the leaves, and then he jumped out and "scared" Athena and got a good laugh out of it. I got a good laugh at the face Lydia made after she dunked her chicken nugget in barbecue sauce, thinking it was ketchup. She is still the most physical, active baby you ever saw. She broke one of our ornaments and the pull-string on the light in our laundry area.
That same weekend, I also went to a really nice Hanukkah dinner at the synagogue, where I got some compliments on my sequined ugly Hanukkah sweater and ate enough latkes to satisfy even my appetite! We all played a "guess how many dreidels are in the jar" game that I didn't win but did come pretty close on.
Athena's presents were two packages of her favorite crescent rolls and a bottle of wine that we had at Thanksgiving and she really liked. Sara's Hanukkah presents to me were a pack of fancy parmesan cheese, a bag of frozen meatballs, and two small hand-weights (still trying to build my upper-body strength). I gave Mom her gift, already all wrapped, while she was here at Thanksgiving, and I bought Sara's Christmas gift this weekend, which means that I'm now DONE with my Christmas shopping! Hallelujah!
