Last year, Sara and I didn’t watch Speed on New Year’s Eve like we usually do. We were both feeling crappy and went to bed early. NYE 2019 was not long after our neighbor’s house fire, and I had a lot of paranoid nights around that time (and sometimes I still do), and for some reason, that night was one of the worst. I remember just lying in bed, wide awake and sick with worry, as the world went from 2019 into 2020. It was a crappy way to start the year, and 2020 lived down to those expectations. But NYE 2020 was a much better night, and I like to think it’s a sign that we’re in for a better year. We watched Speed and worked on the new puzzle that Athena gave Sara for Christmas. We made our favorite cheese dip, and I drank lots of wine. I even got off from work early that day, and I don’t think that’s ever happened on NYE at my job before before.
A few other bits of news about Hanukkah and Christmas:
~ Hanukkah celebrations were all virtual this year, except for the giant menorah lighting. I attended that, and even though I almost froze solid because it was held on one of the coldest nights so far this winter (and it started snowing right after I got back), I’m glad I went, because the Orthodox were giving out jelly donuts and latkes. I only got one of each, and it was the ONE AND ONLY latke that I had this whole Hanukkah. My temple was selling Hanukkah dinners with latkes, brisket, etc., but they sold out before I could buy one.
~ Athena and her kids came over the weekend before Christmas and opened their gifts from us. We got them a few books, a hoodie for Abram, and a few small toys. Athena got Sara a new puzzle and me spaghetti fixings. I didn’t get her anything, which I felt bad about, but she said she didn’t want anything, and you all know how much I despise exchanging gifts. But I’m just glad we could all get through the holidays without anybody throwing a damn tantrum (which has happened before).
~ Going all the way back to when I was a kid, Mom has said almost every year that it’s going to be a “small Christmas,” but it was never true. Come Christmas morning, there was always a huge pile of presents. (Gifts have always been her love language, and she has to be buying you stuff all the time, even if you don’t want it.) This year, she said it once again, but this time, it was actually true!!! I’m still kinda in shock over that. She didn’t even give out electric toothbrushes, which are usually one gift that I look forward to. She’s still recovering from all the hurricane damage in my hometown (and so is everyone else there). Sara and I went to the movies on Christmas Day, which we hadn’t done in a while, and saw the new Wonder Woman.
I’ll be posting my book list for 2020 soon. I’ve already finished my first two books of 2021, and January 20 cannot get here soon enough!!!
