Saturday in the park, I think it was the 4th of July...

As soon as Memorial Day was over, I started looking forward to the 4th of July holiday. We didn't set off any fireworks, and it was too rainy to go to the waterpark, but we did have a good time anyway. On Thursday night (July 2), we went to dinner and to the movies to see Inside Out. It was very good, in the way that most Pixar movies are. We had a conversation on the way back about what our own core memories and islands might be. I'm pretty sure that I have a Jew Island and Fanfiction Island.

On Friday (July 3), I made a day-trip to a touristy little town about an hour away where I'd never been before. It sprinkled on and off during my drive there, which was a lot more backwoodsy than I would've liked, but as soon as I reached my destination and found a parking place, the sky fell out and it started pouring! UGH! I was so frustrated, but I grabbed my umbrella and tried to do some sightseeing anyway, and I'm glad I did, because eventually, the clouds cleared and the sun came out again!

Their downtown area was really pretty. There were lots of picturesque old houses, shops, boutiques, art galleries, murals, and displays. There was also a really nice park with some hiking trails, which is what I'd initially wanted to do, but I wandered around downtown just looking at things so long that I didn't really hike that much. The trails were steeper than I'd expected, anyway.

The town's Reform temple was close to downtown, so I walked there for Shabbat services that evening. The congregation was so small and old and welcoming that I almost felt like I was back at my hometown temple. That is one of the things that I really love about being Jewish. Even when I'm going to a new temple where I've never been before, the people there don't really feel like strangers. They feel like friends that I haven't met yet. I know it sounds cheesy, but it's true. I felt so at-home here that I walked right into their social hall, sat down, started eating their oneg food and talking. (Their egg salad was really good.)

We mostly stayed home on Saturday (July 4) and watched movies. I woke up early, made some popcorn, and watched a child-actress movie that I'd been wanting to see, one of my favorite things to do, Annie. I sincerely do NOT get all the hateful reviews for this movie! It wasn't perfect, but it was darn good! Later she and I watched The Woman in Black 2 (not as good as the original, but sequels never are) and The Duff. I almost died laughing when we heard our neighbors setting off fireworks and she said, "Oh, it's the 4th of July. Now I remember."

On Sunday (July 5), I finished off the weekend as I usually do, with a visit to the dog-park. It was kinda bittersweet this time, though. Lacey, my very favorite dog, was adopted. Her adoption hadn't been posted on the shelter's Facebook page, so I'd had no idea and it was a hard shock when I went to her kennel and she wasn't there. I love all the dogs at the shelter and want them to get adopted into good homes, but when it finally happened to Lacey, I was unprepared. She was so sweet and friendly and I loved playing with her. I think I'd bonded more with her than any other dog so far. Oh, I so hope that she's happy with her new family. I will miss her so much.
