Hope things work out okay with McDiva. Am sure they will. She is such a talented young woman.
Good luck with the surgery - and I will catch up with your noel_of_spike story over the weekend.
I spent a lot of the holidays holding babies too. My niece had twins back in August and this New Year was the first time I'd seen them. So cute! Plus, you can hand them back afterwards. ;)
Did you watch Agent Carter, btw? It was a lot of small woman improbably hitting much larger men, like you said. But I loved it anyway. However, no one on LJ seems to want to talk about it.
Babies! Twins, even!?! Our newest one is so mellow. Anybody can hold him and he'll be perfectly okay with it and even entertained. He likes to stare deeply into your eyes, the l'il mesmerizer. The toddler is the spittin' image of Boo from "Monsters Inc.", except that she speaks in complete sentences. It's uncanny.
McDiva is pretty happy to be home, but I don't know how she's going to square staying in San Francisco, not going to college, and getting her own place (with roommates) as she seems to want. She's very decided without having a lot of perspective on life, seems to me. She'll figure things out, as we all did. ;-) My banging away about what she ought to do won't make the slightest difference, except to make both she and I thoroughly disgusted with me.

Unfortunately, this is very true. :(
M is off travelling for three months in March in south-east Asia. Needless to say, I'm not happy about it. It doesn't help that wherever she says she wants to go, people seem to get horribly murdered.
I don't suppose it helps to know that people are being horribly murdered all over? No? Imagine that.
The transition from child to adult is hard…though not for them, apparently. I'm pretty sure M will have a marvelous time. Wish her bon voyage from us, please.
Hope everyting will be ok, both with McDiva and the surgery. And I just want tell you, "When You Wish Upon a Bar" was one of the things that made my Christmas merry)
It was on 7th January, but there is still "Old New Year" coming on 14th. (And I just love having double set of holidays, even if they are non-official))
Thanks, and right back atcha on the friendship front. I forgot to mention that I also helped out with uploads to AO3 this year. It wasn't a totally unproductive year!
:) It's very nice to hear from you (and thank you for my card, by the way - I have been awful at acknowledging them but it was lovely to receive). Glad you've been busy and mostly happy.
Condolences to the Mr, and his colleagues. It's a hell of a thing, and hard not to think about even though there's nothing to be done except, as you say, not let the right make this a chance to make ground.
Greetings of the New Year to you! You have been very busy as well, but much better at communicating same to us, your adoring public! Keep it up, please. *mwah*
And I know everyone probably already told you this or you figured it out on your own but college isn't for everyone. It doesn't mean she's a failure or any less. It just means that environment wasn't the best for her. The US pushes college on kids so hard these days and frankly, it's BS (I say this as someone in academia). We've put such an emphasis on a piece of paper, it's just ridiculous. Some of the most successful people in the world never went to college. I'm sure McDiva will be just as successful!
I'm totally with you that not all kids need to or should go to college. It's been my litany for a lot of years that there are lots of roads to success and we do a disservice to a lot of people by expecting the exact same thing of everybody. It's a little worse here in California as they won't even let kids graduate from high school if they can't show a certain level of high math skills. It's ridiculous to tell kids that they are worthless if they can't do algebra. Algebra is great, but it's not exactly a necessary life skill. So the drop out rates soar. Don't even get me started…
But MY kid should of course go to college. Ahem. She definitely has the intellect. What she doesn't have is a willingness to suffer fools. She gets it from her father's side. It'll all work out eventually. She may decide to go later, once she's got a bit more perspective on things, or she may find a different way to achieve her goals. Which will hopefully include a bit more than "hanging out". Since she's working and covering her expenses
