Fic: The Joys of Messiaen

Sep 11, 2010 12:38

I’ve mixed fandom and study. God help me.

I was studying for a music assessment I have to sit on Tuesday, and then this fic popped into my head.

Title: The Joys of Messiaen.
Pairing/s: None. Well, I guess if you squint really hard, turn your head sideways and the monitor upside down, there is hints of pre-slash Sherlock/John. You’d have to be really ( Read more... )

This was definitely interesting. I like their interaction and how John's learning/learned Sherlock - AND vice versa. Nice writing and very interesting music bits. (I'm as clueless, in general, as John in that area, but it's interesting.)

Well done, you!

Whee, thanks very much. ^^; Glad you enjoyed reading it!

And don't worry, I'm studying this stuff and it's still not concrete in my mind, unfortunately. It's good that you find it interesting, though! I love seeing the methods behind the madness, so to speak, and I think Sherlock would, too.

Again, thanks for reading and commenting. <3

That is a fantastic was to revise for an assessment! XD Very amusing and enjoyable to read (even if I'm still terrible and don't really know Sherlock Holmes very well.)

Thanks!

You really have to read/watch! Although I must warn you, it can get a wee bit addictive.

saw Messiaen in the description and had to click on this - love that music! SO nice to have Sherlock playing this and educating John about it. Lovely coming together of two excellent things.

more musical education please...

Messiaen is amazing, this is true. I'll admit, before we started this unit on his Quartet for the End of Time, I hadn't listened to a lot of his work -- now I realise I've definitely been missing out!

I'm glad you thought so. ^^; Music and Sherlock go hand in hand, don't they?

I just might have to use this format to revise for music more often. 8D

yes, music and Sherlock go hand in hand - or should - actually there isn't nearly enough about this, so I'm very glad you've started on this line of writing!

did the Messiaen as part of my music study at school more years ago than I care to remember, and loved it. Just gorgeous.

look forward to more of your music revision fic!

I agree! There needs to be more Sherlock fic which features music!

It's an awesome piece of music. I'm trying to compose a piece using his modes of limited transposition right now, and it's... interesting, to say the least. Lol!

Hopefully as exams approach I shall actually have some time to write :3 and then we shall see more of it!

Lovely fic! Loved Sherlock showing his musical side to John.

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed reading it.

I love the idea that Sherlock is constantly high-strung and on the go ALL THE TIME, and yet music is something that he realises transcends logic and all of that, even whilst there are some very mathematical and logical approaches to it (like Messiaen's, although he saw it as divine inspiration). I'm not even sure that sentence made sense, haha.

Lovely. I don't know a thing about Messiaen; the music sounds fascinating. I've always wondered how Sherlock would feel about Paganini, myself.

It really is a very fascinating approach to composition and just music in general! Makes for some very interesting (albeit somewhat headache inducing) topics for study.

Someone will have to write a fic so we can find out. :3

I kind of think that Sherlock would go for something that's definitely atypical, but not in like, an indie way or anything like that. I wonder if he listens to free jazz... 8D
