Sallie's out at the main bar today, enjoying a cup of coffee and making her way through receipts and supplies that needs to be restocked behind the serving area --

When a red flashing alarm light goes off above her head, and a banner unfurls across the bartop.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SALLIE REYNOLDS!

"Ugh. Who told?"

"Uh. Mike? Shouldn't you be doin' something productive with yourself?"

Like jumping off a building? Geez.

Of course he would say something like that.

Sallie points to above her head. "Why do we even have that siren? And what's up with the thing on your head?"

"I think it...she...can read your mind," says a helpful friend.

"Charlie! Ah, yes, I know, but this is a little much."

Sirens are never super appealing, to any Reynolds.

"Mike has already accosted me."

"I suggest you take the banner down ASAP then. Unless you want everyone to make your day overstuffed with greetings?" Which she may or may not like.

"Bar isn't going to let me."

Sallie's eyes then glaze over ever so slightly, and one corner of her mouth lifts.

"For the next hour. It's her form of compromise."

"It's a grapevine," River informs her mournfully.

Mock-mournfully.

(It's not a very good mock, either.)

She drops onto the next barstool over, and flashes a quick grin at her. "We'll have to declare it inevitable."

"Hello to you too, my dear," Sallie returns, even though not much of what River just said at her indicates a straight up-and-down salutation. She'll just roll with it.

"I could've done without the siren though, all told."

River grimaces amiably upwards at the siren. (Even though it's no longer blaring, nor in fact anywhere to be seen.)

"We'll use candles instead."

Sam's almost to the door with the coffee he'd come in to get, but the siren grabs his attention, fast.

He whirls around to face the unknown threat, and then cracks a huge grin on seeing the banner and realizing what's going on.

"Happy birthday, Sallie."

"Sam!"

She shouldn't be as surprised as she sounds to see him whole and relaxed. As much as Sam ever relaxes.

"Thank you - I ain't sure it needed to be advertised so, but."

"Would you have told anyone about it otherwise?" he counters, walking over to join her.

"Well. No. When you put it like that."
