I got an e-mail from one of my professors yesterday with this subject line: "could you do me a favor

that strikes me as kind of out of line, actually. he reads like it's a totally expected favor, and i suppose that's okay, if you can ask him a favor academically too.

I'd proceed with caution. Most Profs should have a peer editing group already in place, usually form his grad school time. If he doesn't, he must have pissed people off. If he's pissed off his peers, there is probably a good reason.
