I've recently been gorging myself on books by never (by me) before read authors, and have been very successful. I'd especially like to recommend:

The Chronicles of Siala by Alexey Pehov (translated from Russian by Andrew Bromfield). A trilogy including:
Shadow Prowler
Shadow Chaser

What's the best thing about Chronicles of Siala?

I need to be sold before I had a trilogy to the reading list, see. ;)

I do not give recommendations lightly. But let's see. The best thing is that, despite any summary I give sounding like it's full of cliches, the book doesn't play to any of them. It is fresh and original; it is a small story made huge; and the likeable first person protagonist is clever but not perfect, humorous but sometimes annoyed . . .

No. The best part is two sequences in which the protagonist enters terrifying places alone: one in the first book, one in the third.
