Bush's approval ratings are atrocious. The real problem is that it takes Americans a tad too long to realize what's what. The American public is easily manipulated and Republicans are notoriously better at spin.
Blair was only reelected because people voted for his party, not him in particular. He would be well on his way out by now if it weren't for his handling of the London bombings.

true; that and the fact that there is absolutely no credible opposition. nor will there be by the time of the next election (phew!) also in his favour was the fact that he'd already said that this will be his last.
the war played only a small part in the election campaign, due to the fact that the tories supported it too - any sudden opposition looked like sudden opportunism than conviction.
so yes, there's an irony to be pointed out - but the same thing applied equally to saddam outlasting the western leaders who led the first war...
