Good decision. It may seem like a lot of money, but it's still cheaper than buying this or that season of a show on DVD sight unseen. As for myself, I need cable because I might otherwise go into withdrawal without access to Turner Classic Movies.
The bottom line is that you have more choice even if you don't avail yourself of it. One day, you'll thank me for imparting this pearl of wisdom upon you. I think.
Oops. Forgot to put in my John Hancock. (As for Johnny himself, when I think of him, I am reminded of his depiction as Congress's moderator who keeps swatting flies.)
I haven't tried Ugly Betty because it sounds as if it would hit my social-embarrassment buttons, but I have heard many excellent things about it from some very unlikely people.
Actually -- you'd think it was a comedy of embarrassment but I think that was the hook to grab normal people into the show. In reality it is about the triumph of smarts and heart over vapid beauty. Betty is the kind of wonderful person that inspires people around her to be better than they are. It is an uplifting show -- mixed in with the over-the-top soap opera cliches. The best (which I will not give away) is about the identity of the person in recovering in the hospital.
Watch it from the beginning of the series.
Oh, and have you seen "Daleks in Manhattan" yet! Wow!
I get a kick out of the fact that the brother of Betty's boss is now the sister of Betty's boss, and is played by the same actress who was shape-shifter Mystique in the X-men movies.
As for TCM... Indeed. I miss the days when TCM and AMC were both reliable sources of old movies, until AMC became like a branch of Blockbuster with twenty copies of the same late-80s/early-90s movies.

I haven't been watching movies much in the last eight years, but I could start again. Who knows?

TCM is an addiction. I have sometimes watched one movie after another and lost all track of time.
Shows to get hooked on that you would never suspect: Ugly Betty.
