I've just got my Onmyoji and Onmyoji II DVD set, which are Japanese historical fantasies set at approximately the time of Murasaki. I'm not sure how historically accurate the costuming and set dressing is - the makeup is much more palatable to our 21st-century eyes than historically accurate makeup would be, for one - but it was filmed at the 19th ( Read more... )

Costumes and makeup aside, the Kyuudo is excellent. That shot Himiko makes? Beautiful form.

Some of the props (koto in the second movie, for example) also look v. good.

I think Abe no Seimei lived a bit before Murasaki, if I'm remembering right.

From what I can find, they were alive at the same time, near the end of Abe no Seimei's very long life - he lived from about 921-1005, and Murasaki was 975 to somewhere between 1014 and 1025ish.

I adored the Onmyoji movies, if only for a really wonderful glimpse into Japanese magic and folk monsters. Also, butch princess-- what's not to like about that?

I am replying here because I also have to tell you that I adore that icon.

Be sure to watch the "making of" bits. They are worth it.

Did they blacken the teeth? One of my really weird Genji
moments was reading how cute a kid was because his teeth were decaying and that made him look so grown-up.

Don't think they did. I don't remember the teeth at all, and I think I would have remembered if they blackened them. But that's what Photoshop's for. XD (I could probably put the approximate makeup on in Photoshop, if I knew what it was like beyond pale with those two smudges for eyebrows high up.

Oh, I'd like to see a shot of the costumes. I can't picture how the women could walk on their robes without tripping every step.

D'oh! You are going to get a belated gift from me of Onmyoji II, courtesy of Geneon sending me freebies, along with the Envy & Tiger Lily imps (sent it yesterday). :-) Pass it along to someone who will appreciate it.
