All the windows are opened in his apartment and the power is out in his building, because today is the day his super chose to mess with the electricity. Gabriel is miserable. It is too hot for pants, but he wears them anyway. He tries to be productive, but in the end he sat at his table thinking about working. He could have gone outside and wonder around for a bit, but he couldn't think of anything to do.

His phone rings.

“Hello?”

“I’m coming over to rescue you.”

“Maya…?”

“Be ready when I get there.”

“Wait, Maya, where are you?”

“About 5 blocks away, I figured I’d give you a little warning this time.” He heard the smile in her voice. His mouth twitched.

“Warning huh? You’ll have to wait. I was just about to grab a shower.”

“You haven’t showed yet?”

“No, I have I just - it’s really hot out.”

“Go for it. I’ll walk slowly and give ya time to get ready.”

“You sure you’ll be okay out there?”

“You’re wasting time.”

“Walk slowly, and be careful. The heat is making everyone crazy.”

“It’s making me crazy.”

“What?”

“I’m hanging up now. Go, handle your business.”

The phone clicked and he rushed to the bathroom.

*

He stood in the bathroom one towel tucked securely around his waist, and scrubbing at his hair with another. His body still wet from the cooling spray of the shower. He opened his bathroom door making his way to his room, water and towel falling over his eyes as he rushed to get ready. There was a sound and he felt something crash into him. He’d been startled, and grabbed hard at the object in front of him as his feet tangled, and he fell to the floor.

He pressed down on the form beneath him, but it didn’t struggle. And when the towel fell from his face he knew why.

“Maya …?”

“God, maybe I should have knocked.”

*

“What are you doing?”

“I said I was coming over, don’t look so surprised.”

“But I didn’t let you in. I didn’t buzz you up, how did you get into the apartment?”

“Could you maybe get off of me? I can’t really breathe.”

His eyes widened in awareness and he pushed away from her, fisting his hand over the towel about his waist.

“Oh thank god! You are heavy.”

He stands up pulling her with him as he rises, hand like vice clenching over his only piece of covering. She smiles up at him when he lets go of her.

“You ready?”

He felt his jaw drop open and his forehead knit together. She laughed at him. His skin warmed over, spreading down from his chin and fanning over his chest and shoulders. He smoothed his hand over his hair, still wet, and caught the look she gave him. Her eyes seemed to follow the flare of his skin, strengthening it. Her lips parted and he took a fighting step away from her.

“I’m going to…” his thumb jerked in the direction of his bedroom.

“You do that.” Her voice comes out like the sound of dried leaves caught in a breeze and he took another step away from her, backing toward his room. “I’ll just keep myself … out of trouble, for the most part.” She smiled tightly stuffing her hands into the pocket of her shorts. And he turned before she could figure out a way to drum up some more.
