I don't think staying friends would be a good idea. Some people can, but I think for most people it just means a part of you hasn't moved on completely.

friends, i am fortunate to be friends with almost all my ex's. not the last one, though. that breakup was epic awful.
you are beautiful, always, no matter who is in your life.
and reminder to limit contact with him because it hurts you.
