He followed his nose, smelled something he hadn’t smelled in ages, only it was probably in his head because it wasn’t supposed to have a smell, but a lot of things were already in his head anyway, so he continued on.
Down cold corridors, around bends and up stairs, and the little lights on the floor were big warnings to turn back, turn back, but he ignored them as easily as he ignored the hiss of steam and screech of metal as he dragged the door open. Ripped it open. And those little lights turned into big lights, flashed in red instead of pale white and blue-and remained just as unheeded.
He met a pair of red eyes, in fact, met and held them and maybe looked a bit quizzical, because these red eyes were of a scrawny pale boy with a shock of just as pale hair, with open fists and a weak look about him. The patheticness of it, the underlying I will live in the eyes, that was what reminded him of something - something that told him, despite initial disbelief on seeing this boy, that his nose hadn’t led him wrong
