Aww....

What does it mean, though -
The zoo says the newborn cub is genetically unique.

Isn't everyone genetically unique?

Because a lot of zoo animals are really really inbred, they have problems getting mates with a lot of genetic variation; it used to be that they didn't really watch out for making sure siblings didn't mate and stuff like that. So while there's probably always something genetically unique about the babies, they frequently shared a *lot* of genetic material with the other cubs of their generation. I guess this baby is from two parents who weren't related.

I heard that that's really only a problem at southern zoos.

(but i don't know - it's just a rumor - i don't know if it's true . . .)
