SiliCon 2008 is over, all except for the last bits of mop-up. The hotel blew chunks this year - we are royally ticked with them - BUT the people attending had a good time ( Read more... )

There was crazyness abounding, but Chris and I got lucky and were not directly impacted by it. Except for the "twigs" issues.

All in all, we had a very fun weekend.

If you, as chair, are dealing with drama llamas, then you haven't properly delegated. That's what Ops is for, if they're doing _their_ job. Leastwise, was when Gene and I ran the show, many moons ago.

Ops (and Hotel Liason) was dealing with some hotel crap instead. The hotel blew goats this year.

Also, the roles have shifted a little. The special llamas get bumped upstairs.

All in all, it went pretty damn well. The fans had fun, most of the dealers were happy (the ones that weren't had no low price merchandise). Everyone was ticked at the hotel.

OPs should be able to multitask. That, and I think someone should have had a come-to-Jesus chat with the hotel's day manager.

What the hell is going ON there, that things got this bad? Most of the cons don't seem to be having too much trouble with their venues, but y'all and Baycon seem to have no end of it.

Geez. we go away for a few years, and look what happens.

Well, the hotel has changed hands, sort of.

Hilton agreed to make all of their Bay Area properties union as a part of the settlement of the SF hotel strike. Then they sold all of their Bay Area properties to a management company, who then sold them to Hilton LLC, a subsidiary, thus getting around the agreement.

This did two things:
1. made their ability to get things like 8' tables very limited, and
2. put the management into a very penny wise, pound foolish mode

I swear they hired their management team from failed Motel 6 properties. They think that mundane business meetings are "better" (more profitable) than conventions with heavy restaurant traffic.

I have a feeling that the hotel will either A) change hands again during the coming year, or B) fold completely.

I really pity FurCon and PantheaCon - both way bigger than SiliCon, and the stupid hotel is planning on having "Sprigs" only open for breakfast. I envision riots, personally ( ... )
