With the lions and the camels and the tree of life? I would like use it as a basis for a cloak I would like to make. Does anyone know of any sources that have close up pictures of the embellishment? I have read the descriptions, but would really like to see the detail work myself to determine what is couched and what is split stitch and which ( Read more... )

I just watched an amazing YouTube video on the mantle which had great close-ups. Amazing. - the original mantle is enormous, if I take this on, I might have to make more of a cape.

I have a couple of ideas, nothing concrete yet -- most likely will be a purple base instead of red and the images will be recipient specific

Yeah, long term project I think - something that will have to be a surprise so I do not feel pressure since it is going to be very very time consuming

if the cloak is in an Austrian museum, then REAL online should have it and tons of details. This page explains how the database works and the link to it. I'd search it for you BUT I have to get someone to bed and I figure you want the info now than later...

Found some more really good detailed picts...caz you put in my mind that there is knowledge I don't have....and I curse you! None of my embroidery books say anything about it being painted at all, so I guess is just is a case of not finding a picture that is as extremely close of the lions/camels sections. Even the parts that look rubbed off and show red can be accounted for the fact that the gold was generally wrapped around a red base thread.
