They don’t find the time to actually have dinner together before Tess’ problem starts to become dangerous. Kahlan has to keep her eyes and ears open for signs of Rahl and Dewitt while Cara has so many cases on her hands that she barely has time to eat, let alone cook something that doesn’t come out of a can.
Only when the detective receives a call from a certain blue-eyed brunette does she take half the day off to meet with Kahlan and her friend.
They sit together in a small restaurant, somewhere in the darkest corner, while they sip on their drinks. Tess is unlike anyone Cara has ever met before, but he seems to possess no criminal energy whatsoever.
It is fairly safe to say that, apart from being in a relationship with a powerful man, he has done nothing wrong. Cara agrees to help and they eventually come up with a plan to lure this guy, Alec, and his little friends into a trap.
While Tess is supposed to further refuse to help them blackmail the mayor, Cara and Kahlan only have to wait until they make an attempt to destroy Tess’ shop.
That is in fact how those guys work and why their next steps are so very predictable.
They keep watch every night, knowing that the attack will happen after sunset, pretty much around the time Tess usually locks up his shop and goes home. His partner Tony is in on the plan and has begun leaving early, making the dark-skinned designer an easier target.
…
Cara sits in her office, late as usual, when her cell phone vibrates quietly. Since the damn thing had scared her witless the last couple of times with its zombie music intro as ring tone she’d opted for turning it on vibrate for the time being.
She only looks at the message for a couple of seconds before she is up and out of her chair, on her way to the elevator. She pulls on her jacket and fastens her gun to her belt, knowing that she needs to be fast now.
She and Kahlan had started watching the shop at night, each taking a turn when the other didn’t have time or needed rest. The detective made Kahlan promise to text her first thing when those bastards showed up, and to wait until the blonde arrived to take care of the situation.
Cara makes her way through the streets as quickly as she can with worry creasing her brow the entire time, but to her complete horror the door to the shop is wide open when she arrives.
Cara jumps out of her car, pulls out her gun and runs toward the entrance.
There is no noise inside and a terrible ache settles in the pit of the detective’s stomach.
“I told her to wait for me,” she growls and slips inside.
The sight that greets her is a surprise, to say in the least.
Kahlan is standing over Tess, dabbing a wound on his forehead with disinfectant. The brunette turns to Cara when she hears her gasp.
Kahlan’s lip is split and she slightly cringes in pain when she straightens to smile at the detective.
The shop is in complete disarray, clothes are all over the place while pieces of destroyed furniture are everywhere. There is a dent in the counter, right next to the cash register, that has way too much the size of a human skull.
To Cara’s relief there are three men on the ground on the far side of the shop. They all seem to be in some state of unconsciousness while their hands and feet are securely tied together with belts.
“Sorry. We would’ve waited for you but they were trying to smash everything into pieces,” Kahlan says apologetically and Tess nods in agreement.
“How did you…?” Cara begins but shakes her head, still staring at the scene before her.
“Never mind, you can tell me later. I’ll take those guys to the station and get the paperwork done. I want both of you checked for any injuries…”
She sees Kahlan and Tess exchange a look.
“You’re not going to go anywhere near a hospital, are you?”
They both silently shake their heads and Cara sighs.
“Wait here, okay? I’ll try to hurry and get back here as soon as I can.”
Cara shoots one wary glance in their direction before she drags one guy after the other to her car. She unceremoniously shoves them into the back, making sure that neither is able to move freely.
She is still fairly worried as she delivers the men to the police station and can’t shake the feeling that she has missed out on something important, without knowing exactly why.
The men are put behind bars by a young officer and Cara quickly fills out a few forms before she is back on the street and on her way to Tess’ shop.
Of course Kahlan wouldn’t hold still and wait for her. No, she just had to throw herself into yet another brawl and get hurt.
The blonde actually had to restrain herself from jamming those bastard’s heads into the nearest prison cell wall for splitting open Kahlan’s lip and that is an altogether new feeling for the usually so composed detective.
When Cara gets back, Kahlan and Tess are standing in front of the shop. The designer hurries over to her when she gets out of the car and grabs her hand with both of his.
“Thank you detective. I hope I’m rid of ‘em sons of bitches now and can live my life in peace.”
Cara nods.
“I got a few criminals behind bars, so I should probably be thanking you. This Alec person is wanted for several delinquencies and he won’t bother you for a few years to come.”
“I certainly do hope so.”
Tess glances over his shoulder with a small smile.
“I guess you want to talk to Miss Black Belt now.”
He shakes his head and chuckles.
Cara only raises an eyebrow but doesn’t ask any questions.
Instead she agrees when Tess asks her to take Kahlan home because he needs some more time to sort through the mess that is his shop now. Cara shares one last smile with him and then turns to hesitantly approach Kahlan who stands there with her hands clasped behind her back.
“Hey.”
“Hey. So, are you okay?”
The brunette nods.
“Yep, I’m fine. Just a scratch.”
She points toward her split lip and green eyes follow, only to settle there for longer than is probably appropriate.
Cara closes her eyes for a moment and then focuses on Kahlan.
“I’ve gotta ask though, how did you manage to knock out all three of them?”
“Oh, I had the element of surprise on my side. And Tess was there to help me as well.”
Kahlan shrugs and the movement causes her to gasp quietly. She tries to cover up that little slip with a smile that is a tiny bit too bright.
Cara narrows her eyes and she realizes that every breath is causing Kahlan pain. It is fairly visible in her features which she tries to keep straight with all her might.
But since Cara is fairly certain that Kahlan can be very stubborn, she doesn’t mention it. Instead she offers to take Kahlan home and they both get into her car.
Kahlan grimaces as she lowers herself into the seat and Cara barely manages not to put her hand on the brunette’s arm in a soothing touch. Her fingers twitch and she wraps them tightly around the steering wheel.
“You should really try to be more careful. You’re getting into dangerous situations far too often,” Cara says casually as she drives them through the nightly city.
“I’ll do my best. I’m really not keen on getting beat up all the time.”
Kahlan smiles and shakes her head.
“But thank you for worrying detective.”
Cara looks at Kahlan for a moment and returns the smile.
With a few directions from the brunette they manage to find the right street and before Kahlan even has the chance to say goodbye, Cara is already getting out of the car, insisting on bringing Kahlan to the door of the apartment.
To say that Kahlan is embarrassed would be an understatement. She obviously doesn’t want Cara to see the inside of the building, let alone any of the people living there, but the blonde sticks to her side while they make their way up the stairs.
Without being asked, she follows Kahlan into the apartment as soon as the door is unlocked
“I live here with my cousin…” Kahlan explains and looks around warily.
Said cousin doesn’t seem to be home and the detective is glad about the fact that they have a few moments without interruption.
The apartment, however, is tiny compared to where Cara lives and the furniture seems rather run-down.
“It looks…sufficient,” Cara says slowly and Kahlan chuckles darkly.
“That’s one way to put it.”
The detective then turns to Kahlan and looks at her sternly.
“Kahlan.”
“Uhm…yes?”
“I know you won’t admit it but you’re hurt. I’m guessing that it’s your ribcage, but I really have to have a look at it to be sure.”
Kahlan’s eyes suddenly widen and panic flashes through those blue orbs.
“No! I mean I’m okay. It’s just a bruise, nothing to worry about, I’ll put some ice on it and it will be just fine.”
She crosses her arms before her chest as if to protect herself from yet another attack and even takes a small step back to bring some distance between herself and the detective.
Cara immediately regrets being so straightforward and pretty much demanding that Kahlan take off her shirt so she could have a look. After seeing how Kahlan turns into a scared and uncertain version of herself she decides that she needs to go about this differently.
“Alright fine. But if it’s more than just a bruise I really want you to do something about it.”
Kahlan nods and tries to smile.
“Will do.”
“So about that dinner…”
Cara intentionally drops the topic at hand for now to focus on something else.
“How about you just come by my place the day after tomorrow? I’ll cook and we’ll just talk.”
Of course her intention is also to make sure that Kahlan is not in fact seriously injured and the advantage of having the brunette in her apartment is that she can keep a close eye on her.
And she still has to make up for her inappropriate behavior from the other day. Somehow a part of her brain had been drowned in irrational jealousy when she’d thought of Kahlan with that platinum blonde and it had resulted in her lashing out verbally without actually wanting it.
Although Kahlan has seemingly forgiven her, that shocked look on on the brunette’s face is still very present in Cara’s mind.
“Okay. I’ll be there,” Kahlan agrees quickly.
“Great.”
“Good.”
They stand there awkwardly for a moment while Cara isn’t sure how to say goodbye. A handshake seems awfully formal, but a hug wouldn’t be appropriate either.
It then unspectacularly ends with a smile and a friendly nod before Cara is out the door and on the way back to her car.
