Warning One (AU-SPN 'verse, Sam/Ruby-ish, R)

May 02, 2010 20:18

So, here's the AU ficlet I had stuck in my head for almost two weeks before I finally let it out in three crazy hours. I know I said I wanted to rewrite it some, but I'll just post it as it is now. I need to beta my BigBang next week, so no more time for this. I might, however, be up to going back to this little 'verse, if anyone actually likes it. (This was so much fun!!)

Title: Warning One
Author: Vera
Pairing: non!con Sam/Ruby
Rating: R, AU
Disclaimer: Me no own.
Word Count: 3,654
Summary: When District Attorney Sam Winchester started prosecuting Luke Teufel, he never expected the consequences. But in a matter of one day, his life is suddenly getting swooped out from under him.
Author’s Note: Written for an AU challenge at spnland, which had the premise that there was no supernatural in the world of Supernatural.

Sam rushed to the hospital as soon as he’d heard. Stupid Dean. Why hadn’t he called him? He burst through the room and stopped dead in his tracks. His brother’s face was bruised, his right arm and leg were in a cast and he was hooked up to various tubes. Sam cringed. “Jesus fuck, Dean.”

Dean looked chagrined. “Hey there, Sammy. Found out, huh?”

Sam rolled his eyes. “Of course I did, you idiot. You think my friends on the force wouldn’t tell me about this?” Sadly the guys investigating this were rookies, or he’d have heard right away. Gordon Walker finally reviewed the case and called him.

Dean just shrugged. “Did you bring me some pie?”

”No, I didn’t.” Sam pulled up a chair and sat down next to Dean’s bed. “You’re not allowed to eat any yet, you know that.” He’d called ahead and asked, actually. Otherwise, yes, he would have brought Dean some god damn pie, even if Dean hadn’t god damn called him to say he was in the god damn hospital.

Dean snorted. “Doctors. What do they know?”

Sam didn’t dignify this with an answer. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

His brother shrugged and looked away. “Didn’t want to bother you, Sammy. Know you’re busy.”

“I’m not too busy to come visit you in the hospital.” Sam swallowed hard. Granted he’d been spending a lot of time on his recent case, but Dean was his brother. His only living relative. “Jerk.”

Dean turned at that and grinned. “Bitch.”

“So, gonna tell me what happened?” Sam had read the report but he didn’t want to believe Dean had been robbed by two complete strangers wearing ski masks with no significant marks whatsoever. He’d love to believe it, but he knew his brother. And Dean always got himself into trouble.

He was running an auto shop and even though Dean was damn good at his job, he was always short on cash. Mostly because he was gambling it away. Or drinking it away. Or spending it on women. Sam loved his brother, he really did, but sometimes he really wished he wasn’t such a screw up.

“You read the report, didn’t you?” Dean asked him, because yeah, Dean knew him pretty well.

“Yeah.” Sam raised his eyebrow and snagged Dean’s chart to flip through it casually. “So, gonna tell me what really happened?”

Dean sighed. “I was owing some people some money. And usually they give me time to pay them back. I don’t even know what went wrong this time.”

Sam closed his eyes. Deep breaths. Deep breaths. “How much, Dean?”

”Don’t worry about it. I’m gonna pay them back, as soon as I’m out of here.”

“Oh, yeah?” Sam put the chart back in it’s spot on Dean’s bed. “And how you gonna do that? You can’t work right now, Dean. You don’t have any income.”

“I’ll find a way. Always have.” Dean remained stubborn.

“How much?” Sam repeated. “Just tell me how much you owe them.”

Dean looked away again. ”Ten grand.”

Sam’s mouth fell open. “Fuck, Dean!”

“You see, it all started when I met this girl…” Dean started to explain, but Sam cut him off.

“I don’t wanna hear it.” It was always a girl with Dean. And if it wasn’t a girl, then he was just plain drunk. Or he thought it was a really good opportunity. Things have gotten worse since their father died of a heart attack four years ago. They’d run the auto shop together. Winchester & Son. Singular. Sam was the outsider who rather went to law school than learning something useful. “Tell me who you owe it to, and I’ll settle this.”

”You think I’m stupid?” Dean suddenly looked panicked. “I give you his name and you go sic your cop buddies on him. And I’m screwed. Next time, they’ll kill me.”

Sam clenched his fists. “You think I’d risk your life, Dean? You really think that?” He couldn’t sit anymore. Sam kicked the chair back and started pacing the room. “I’m just gonna pay your debt.”

“I don’t need you…”

“Yes, you do!” Sam spat back, once again not letting his brother finish. But then he saw the look on Dean’s face. The shame. And he knew why Dean hadn’t called him. Because it pained him to admit when he needed help. Even more so when the help came from his little brother. Sam sighed. “Dean… just let me do this.”

“Don’t need…” Dean’s features hardened.

“I know you’ll find a way to take care of this, but please let me, okay?” Sam’s tone had softened considerably. “For me. Just let me take care of this so I can sleep easy again.”

Dean breathed, his nostrils flaring, then he closed his eyes. “Fine.” He covered his face with his good hand. “You can loan me the money, and I’ll pay them back. And then in a few weeks, I’ll pay it all back to you. With interest.”

“Fine.” Whatever. Sam knew he’d never see that money again. Dean knew it, too. “I’ll take five percent.”

“Three.” Dean haggled.

“Four.” Sam rolled his eyes. Whatever made this easier for Dean.

“Sold.” Dean held out his hand and Sam shook it. “Greedy bitch.” Dean managed to glare at him.

“And you’re still an idiot.” Sam smiled, happy this was settled. “Next time you call me before this happens, you hear?”

Dean mumbled something unintelligible and Sam was pretty sure Dean wouldn’t call. He never did. “One thing was weird though.” Dean said suddenly.

“What?” Sam cocked his head.

“One of the guys, I think he knew you.” Dean went on.

”How come?” Sam frowned.

”He told me to say hi to my brother.” Dean’s brows furrowed. “And one.”

”What?” Sam’s frown deepened. What the hell? One?

”Don’t ask me. I thought it was weird” Dean shrugged it off. “So, tell me about work.”

Sam would have rather explored this more, but one good look at his brother’s battered face made him not pursue this any further. For now. He’d investigate this though. And if he had to put his own PI on to this one. Andy would find him those names.

He stayed for about an hour, telling Dean all about his recent case while Dean actively listened, encouraging him to keep going, to nail that son of a bitch. Then Dean told him a bit about that Chevy Nova he got in last week, and how it was a sweet ride, but didn’t compare to his baby, the Impala.

By the end of it, Sam was smiling. Dean was happy. He really missed seeing his big brother on a daily basis. But Sam had to move across town to be closer to court and his office and Dean just refused to visit him, claiming he was busy.

Sometimes Sam wondered if Dean just didn’t want to see him, or if he felt he’d embarrass him in front of his colleagues. As if Sam would give a crap what anyone thought of his brother. He just wanted to see him. Sadly his own schedule and workload prevented him from taking the long trip all the way to Dean’s place all too often.

Sam was sad when he had to leave. “Seriously, Dean. You should have called.”

Dean sighed. “It’s not so bad here, you know? Worse things could have happened to me.”

Sam looked him over. “How could this be any worse?”

Before Dean could answer, the door opened and a nurse walked in. A slender, brown haired beauty of a nurse. And just Dean’s type. Sam raised his eyebrow and Dean winked at him. “Ugly nurses,” he whispered, then he donned his most blinding grin. “Carmen! Meet my brother.”

The nurse perked up. “Sammy?” She went to shake his hand and Sam was startled. “I’ve heard so much about you. It’s nice to finally meet you.”

”Uhm, yeah. Hello, Carmen.” Sam was utterly confused.

“I’m so glad you finally found the time to come visit your brother.” She was still smiling, but there was accusation hidden beneath her tone. What the hell?

”Yeah, well. I only found out today, so…” Sam frowned.

”What?” Carmen put her hands on her hips. “Dean! You promised me you’d called him three days ago.”

Sam turned to watch his brother writhe in his bed, obviously flustered. Sam grinned. “I like her.” Anyone who got his brother to squirm like that was okay in his book. “Alright, I have to go. I’ll be back tomorrow. It was nice to meet you, Carmen.” Sam squeezed her hand again with a warm smile and then he turned to go.

“Bring me some pie!” Dean called after him and Sam hadn’t closed the door yet, so he could still hear Carmen chastising him, telling him he wasn’t allowed any such food just yet. Oh yes, Sam definitely liked her.

He hadn’t rounded the first corridor yet, when some guy in a business suit approached him. “Had a good time with your brother in there, Winchester?”

Sam frowned again, an expression he didn’t seem to get rid off today. Seriously. What the hell? “What? Who the fuck are you?”

The guy just smiled at him. “You can call me Crowley. The boss send me to deliver a message. He says this was warning number one. Next time won’t be so pretty.”

”What?” The guy was about to leave again but Sam grabbed his arm and forced him to the side, trying not to make a scene. “You tell me what the fuck that’s supposed to mean right now, or I’ll get security.”

Crowley chuckled. “What you gonna charge me with, Sammy? Talking to you?”

”Don’t call me that.” Sam seethed. “Now tell me who your boss is, and what the hell this means.”

”Aw, Sammy boy.” Crowley shook his head. “And they told me you were the smart one. Back off, or someone’s going to get seriously hurt.” Crowley had managed to pull himself free and turned to leave.

“Back off who? Who?” Sam tried to follow him and corner him again, but two goons suddenly appeared and they were flanking Crowley.

“You can’t be this stupid, Winchester.” Crowley called over his shoulder before he was gone.

Sam slumped against the wall, dumbfounded. Then suddenly it hit him. Luke Teufel. His biggest case right now. Crime Lord extraordinaire. They finally got him on first degree murder, because apparently he liked to do it old school. It must be him. Only guy with possible connections like that.

And that’s why they beat up his brother? Sam suddenly lost all feeling in his legs and he had to sit down. Dean. Dean had a broken leg, a broken arm, he’d be out of work for months. Not to mention the pain he must be in. And all because Sam was prosecuting Teufel?

He equal parts wanted to cry and just plain hurt someone. Before either side could win out, Carmen nudged his shoulder. “Sam?”

Sam looked up.

“It’s not as bad as it looks.” She smiled at him. “Don’t worry. Your brother’s gonna be just fine in no time.”

Sam swallowed hard. “Thank you.” If only that was his main concern right now.

Carmen lingered. “He’s really proud of you, you know?” She waited until Sam looked up at her before she continued. “He talks about you all the time. About his successful brother, the big shot lawyer.”

It was on Sam’s tongue to correct her and say he was the DA, his usual response to pretty girls, but he didn’t. Her words slowly sunk in. “He does?”

Carmen nodded. “I just thought you should know that.” She smiled and squeezed his shoulder, then she left before Sam could even say thank you. Huh. Imagine that.

That night, Sam went out to the bar on the corner of where he lived. He hadn’t even sat down for five minutes when a petite brunette approached him. “Buy you a drink?” She asked.

Sam smiled, flustered. “Shouldn’t I be asking you that?”

She smiled back. “You just looked like you needed one.” She hopped onto the barstool next to him. “But I don’t mind if you pay.” She winked.

Sam’s smile widened. Okay, yes. This would be just what he needed right now. A stiff drink and a pretty distraction. “What are you having…” He let it trail off, hoping to catch her name. She didn’t disappoint.

“Ruby.” Her smile was dazzling. “And a Whiskey, straight up.”

Sam was impressed. “Sam.” He shook her hand, then ordered their drinks. Jameson, for the both of them. And Ruby’s bright smile as she toasted with him was the last thing he remembered before he blacked out.

The next morning he woke up naked and handcuffed to his bed. Ruby was sitting on a chair pulled from his living room, smiling at him. “Oh good. You’re finally awake.”

Sam struggled against the cuffs. “What the fuck?” How the hell did he end up here? In his apartment? Handcuffed to his own bed? Naked? What the hell?

”Aw, Sam. You don’t remember last night? All the fun we had?” Ruby pouted. “You break my heart.” She flipped open a manila folder she was holding. “But thankfully a friend of mine took some pictures, so we’ll never forget.”

She held them up so Sam could see and he paled. That was him, donned in leather gear, and Ruby naked on his bed. In the next picture, she was handcuffed and Sam was lying over her, then there was a close up of leather gloved hands choking her. Sam closed his eyes. He was gonna be sick. “That’s… that… that wasn’t me. I didn’t…” He couldn’t have. Could he?

Ruby slapped the folder against his stomach and Sam winced. “Oh, relax. No, sadly you couldn’t, even as doped up as you were.” She pouted again. “But nobody’s gonna know but us. It’s your gloves, see?” She showed him another picture of him in the leather gear, nonetheless wearing the damn gloves.

Sam shuddered and Ruby laughed. “Why are you doing this to me?”

”Oh Sam. Because it was fun.” She winked and grabbed his cock, stroking him. “For both of us. Trust me.”

Sam tried to move out of her grasp, but he had nowhere to go and he couldn’t buck her off. In fact, bucking just made it worse. And to his utter shame, he was fully erect in no time.

Ruby grinned and licked her lips. “Mmm, I really shouldn’t… but how about a repeat performance? This time it’s really just gonna be us. Huh? How about it, Sam?” Her thumb stroked over his head and Sam winced.

“Get away from me, you sick bitch!” Sam pulled on the cuffs with all his might, but all it did was slam his headboard against the wall.

“Oh, baby.” Ruby let go of his cock and cupped his hands instead. “Stop resisting before you hurt yourself. We’re not at that phase yet.”

Sam frowned. “What? What phase?”

”I dunno.” She smirked. “It’s not my plan. But this?” She laid the folder down on his nightstand. “This is two.” Then she reached for a little leather purse on the ground next to her. “And this will be three.” She opened it up for him to see, and if possible, Sam paled even further.

His stomach lurched. “Don’t.” There was a needle in there, already filled with a clear liquid. And Sam didn’t know what was in there, but he really didn’t want to find out. He once again struggled against the cuffs. She could do anything with him right now. Anything. The realization of it hit him hard.

“Hmm.” Ruby pulled the needle out and twirled it between her fingers. “I wonder though, who will it be most effective on? You, or your brother?”

”What?” He was gonna be sick. This had to be a nightmare.

“Me? I say you can kick this. Whatever we put into you, you’re much too straight not to check yourself into rehab first chance you get. But your brother?” She smirked. “Sad, broken Dean, already riddled with addictions? He’s just gonna gobble this up like candy. Maybe I won’t even have to force him.”

”Stay away from my brother.” With newfound strength, Sam rattled the cuffs again. This time, his bed frame creaked. Ruby looked alarmed for a second, but quickly caught herself.

“He was right.” Ruby scolded him. “Your brother is your weakness.” She sighed. “Pity. I’d have loved to give you a ride through this. Your first time is gonna be magical.”

She packed the needle away again and Sam allowed himself a sigh of relief. Then he remembered that this was not yet over. Far from it. “What do you want?”

”You’re gonna lose that weapon.” Ruby told him, matter of fact.

“What?” Sam’s eyes grew wide. They had the “45 Teufel had shot that poor sap with. Gabriel. Someone from his own crew, his inner circle. Word around was, Gabriel was gonna come clean, turn Teufel in. But he didn’t get the chance. “I can’t do that.”

”Can’t, or won’t?” Ruby smacked her lips. “It’s your choice, Sam. Either Luke walks, or your brother won’t. Ever again.”

“Why are you doing this?” Sam’s mind was still a jumble. In just under 24 hours his life had turned to hell. And all because he was prosecuting a scumbag?

“I’d do anything for him.” Ruby’s eyes were suddenly glazed over. “He’s not a bad guy, you know? He didn’t want to kill Gabe. He was like a brother to him.” Ruby sat up straighter. “But then he had to go and betray him, try and stab him in the back. What was he supposed to do? A lot of people depend on Luke. He takes care of us.”

”Oh, please.” Sam looked at her. “He’s a criminal. A drug lord. A killer.” Sam was also pretty sure that he was dabbling in human trafficking and prostitution. But of course there was no proof.

“You don’t understand.” Ruby threw up her arms.

“Enlighten me.” The more information he could squeeze out of her, the better for his case. Maybe… maybe they could still get him without the gun then.

“He pulled me out of hell.” Ruby nodded enthusiastically. “He saved me. He got me clean. Helped me find myself again. And now he takes care of me. He loves me.” She was glowing.

“Oh?” Sam scoffed. “And all you gotta do is whore yourself out for him? Tell me, Ruby. I’m not the first, am I?”

She slapped his face. Hard. But Sam just grinned at her.

“Struck a nerve there, huh?” Maybe he could get her on his side. Maybe… “He doesn’t love you. But if you leave him, I promise you, we’ll take care of you. Find you a nice new home, a new job. We’ll relocate you. Give you a new identity.”

Ruby stared at him, letting him ramble. But just as Sam’s hopes grew, she shattered them with a loud laugh. “Oh, Sam. Get real.” She stood up and leaned down to force a kiss on him. “Too bad we couldn’t agree on this.”

Sam turned his face away, disgusted. “You leave my brother alone!”

“You have twenty-four hours to decide, Sam. Then I’m gonna pay Dean a little visit.” Ruby turned to go.

“I’ll have him protected. Put him on police surveillance.” Sam was grasping at straws here. “You won’t be able to get to him.”

”Oh, yeah?” Ruby turned again. “And how long’s that gonna last? And are you so sure we won’t be able to get to him?” She raised her eyebrow. “Doctors, nurses, even your precious little cop buddies. They’re all for sale if you put the right price tag on them.”

Sam bit his lip. He refused to believe her.

“Well then, I’ll leave you to think about this. See you, Sam.” Ruby waved and walked out of his apartment, closing the door behind her.

When she was gone, Sam stared at the manila folder on his nightstand. He was still handcuffed to his bed. Dean. Dean had already gotten hurt for him, now they were gonna go further. He really had no choice here, did he? He’d have to risk his career. Steal the gun. Find some other way to nail that bastard. Because he would not give up. Especially not after all of this. They’d made it personal. They’d attacked his family. And if there was one thing nobody screwed with, it was Sam’s brother.

Maybe he could get Dean on boat for this. Work together. Just like old times, when they’d played detective. Sam had always thought Dean’d end up with the force one day, especially when he talked about their mother. She’s been killed in an armed robbery when Sam was only just a toddler. It had broken their dad, but awoken a sense of justice in Dean, who’d passed it on to Sam.

Sadly then Dean had chosen to step in his father’s footsteps after all and that side of him was lost to Sam. Maybe it was time to reawaken it.

Sam mustered up all the strength he had left and finally broke his bed so he could free himself. He found the key to the handcuffs on the nightstand under the manila folder, which he then hid in his sock drawer.

First things first. He was gonna take a long, hot shower and try to scrub clean, then he was going to head back to the hospital and confess to Dean. Because he could really use some help here. And he needed his big brother. Whatever he did, all that mattered was that Dean was okay with it. That Dean was okay. They’d face the consequences. Together. Like it should have been in the first place.
