What a great question, and I loved reading your answer. I've studied several languages, Latin and Spanish the longest, but the thought of communicating in either of them -- well, I couldn't do it. I'm in awe of your fluency and grace in English. Also envious. Also also, when I retire, I'm getting back to language study.
Yeah, the step from knowing some of a language to fluency is really hard. I only ever managed with English, because it is so ubiquitous. Now they push languages more in school, start earlier, and I think you can graduate with just two and dropping the third anymore either. I mean some of my classmates did more (my school offered the usual English, Latin, French, but also Spanish, Italian and Arabic) but it was voluntary.
