Ω Thirty Five - Taking Responsibility

[Private to Rassilon]

[Omega's sitting back on an office, chair, the collar of his shirt unbuttoned, a drink in his hand. He's not looking at the camera, though he glances up at it before he speaks.] We shall have to decide what dialect we are speaking because I was unaware 'making friends with Narvin' was the same as 'make him your lackey'. You've ( Read more... )

[Rassilon is sitting at his desk, hands resting on it, their tenseness and the dark look in his eyes clearly betraying how upset he is, despite his attempts to appear calm. He stubbornly stares into the camera.]

You accuse me wrongly my friend. I had made no plans until he came to me - I would not even have known of the device had he not told me. And he already had his own plans then; my only involvement in this... affair was to make it an official mission. I must also add that I had given no orders on what to do once the device was obtained - I specifically told him we would talk about it then. [Of course, he may say that now, but it's clear what his intention were.]

But perhaps we still need to decide that, since I remember telling you that I had no desire to make friends. I am actually quite sure we discussed the matter not too long ago, so I am surprised you have already forgotten.

[He takes a deep breath.] And it was not an escape attempt. It was an attempt to make absolutely sure that our people would survive.

Must I like every single one to care for my people? And the Doctor knows nothing and understands nothing. You do though - or at least should.

I doubt he would not see through any pretension of change. And you could make the deal.

[A bit softer] If I can be sure Gallifrey is save, I can stay with you. [Preferably on Gallifrey of course.]

I understand that it's far more complex than he's prepared to admit.

Then don't pretend. You want Gallifrey to be saved? Then be open to new ideas, new ways of thinking, or is that too big a sacrifice for you to be making?

[He sighs.] Narvin's already made the deal, as I believe I've mentioned to you before.

Good.

You don't understand. Changing is not that easy! And I don't even know the Admiral's criteria.

[Frown] Have you? [Pause] You could too. If he makes it, all the better, if he does not, there's still a chance. [Another pause. A thought suddenly hits him.] If he has, why did he not tell me of that, instead of making plans to steal that time travel device? [Someone is suspicious. And still tries to pretend it's all Narvin's fault.]

I understand perfectly, I'm not claiming ease. I'm claiming necessity.

He's CIA, options after options, contingency after contingency, that's how he thinks. Or perhaps he'd rather avoid backseat wardening.

[And because he knows Rassilon won't just leave it.] My deal... involves my sanity. [Well, the Doctor being let free along with this body, while Omega goes back to his old one without risk from the resulting insanity but he can't tell Rassilon that.] If I have to, I can get another inmate, then I will make that my deal.

Then tell me how to do it, if you understand so well! Because I do believe, changing was another thing we talked about not too long ago.

I could have considered it, had he mentioned it. And if he finds the Final Sanction preferable to... 'backseat wardening', will you still insist it is all my fault?

[He suddenly goes tense, eyes wide. What?] What is the problem? [And he thought Omega was fine!]

Changing back was what we discussed. I have no intention of de-aging you. [Though that did help him, didn't it.]

He doesn't. I've spoken to him.

I don't intend on spending my entire existence with another mind in mine.

Good. [But he still doesn't want to.] But change is always a problem, especially if it is forced.

Then why did he not tell me of this?

That? [Oh. Well, he already knows of the Doctor. But...] Did you not say you are supposed to... make him a part of yourself?

Who's forcing you? You're being enticed. And change happens all the time. It's nature's law of survival that which changes survives, else it dies off.

What part of 'scared of you' do you not understand?

Yes. Listen, this is complex, and not at all relevant.

But then it is simply natural adaption, not forced. It would be the same process that got me to the point where I am now. [And he really doesn't see why his current self is such a problem for Omega.] That doesn't guarantee I will change the... desired way.

It's no excuse to withhold information! You cannot blame me if I made my decisions based on a faulty report. And, again, I had not given any orders on what to do with the device.

Of course it is relevant. You are my friend and this concerns your mental health. How could it not be relevant?

You're in a different environment, subject to different experiences. The only guarantee I have is your word. [Is that enough?]

You've lost the right to be angry at him. And perhaps he did, given all the things you've conveniently forgotten that I told you, who knows what you've missed coming from Narvin's lips?

No, this concerns your mental health, if not Narvin's. You can expect me to answer questions on my health when you refuse to take responsibility for that of my friend's.

I can try, but I cannot guarantee anything. [He still isn't quite sure what people expect from him.]

[And now he's sulking again. Why is it just his fault? Narvin is the one who mindwiped people and tried to steal time machines, after all.] He certainly did not, I can assure you.

My mental health is fine and I don't expect I will get the chance to do anything with Narvin again. And am I not allowed to worry about my friend?

No, you won't. It's a little too late to be worrying about me, isn't it?

How so?

...I do not wish for you to be hurt, Omega. I simply... I need to save them. It seemed... like the logical course of action, with the information given.

There was another one: asking her. Do you really think Ms Persson would have said no with all we had at stake? At least to the plans of the device? It's not like you don't know someone with the skill to recreate it. [The cosmic engineer for example?]

I do not know her well enough to assume what she would and wouldn't do. And again, Narvin came up with the plan. Considering he has been on this ship for quite a bit longer than I have, I assumed his information wold be correct and any plans he suggests thought through. You said yourself he is trustworthy - I trusted him to know what he's talking about and this happened.

I... I apologize for hurting you, Omega, but I cannot be the only one to bear the blame.
