First of all, yay - very shiny challenge!
Now to the questions:
1) When you say that people must sign up for big fandom, do you mean any fandom too big for yt?
2) Will you be updating the list of big fandoms with any other fandoms are are declared too big for yt following noms?
I'm sure I had another question but I've forgotten it.
Thank you so much for organising this! :D

Cool! It will be fun helping with the research (an excuse to look through fandoms and find more stories to read) :)

On a different subject, I don't know if you reaslise, but for some reason this lj layout seems to have the content in a very narrow column in the middle of the screen (with a lot of enpty space on either side) - it would be easy to use it if didn't (otherwise I can use style=mine), but I suspect it might be a problem for other people as well.

What about fandoms which are ensemble casts (or are just giant)?

For example, I could imagine that even if only 10% of Harry Potter fiction includes Tonks, that there is still a metric fuckton of Tonks-centric fic.

Similarly, if we assume that fic features 2 characters prominently on average and there's a magical fandom where everyone has the same number of fics (which would be 2/n of all fics in that fandom), a fandom with ten or more characters would have all the characters have less than 20% of fics. Again, Harry Potter comes to mind, since there are loads and loads of characters.

Not sure, besides maybe a relative percentage and an absolute number: something like less than 1000 fics on ff.net* or 20% of fics, whichever is smaller for the fandom.

* Number totally pulled out of thin air.

This is an good idea. I'm not sure about the number - partly because the only easy way to look at it is the two characters that are specified (on the assumption that those character feature heavily in the story)
Here are some numbers:
Amelia Bones: 40
Alisa S: 309
Andromeda T: 1,144
Astoria G: 844
Bellatrix: 4,528
Cho C: 1,668
Ginny: 35,804
Susan Bones: 264
Hermione: 97,976
(all counting all stories in English)
There are currently 558,532 stories total for Harry Potter on ff.net.
20% would be 111706.4 stores....

Hope this is useful. It was certainly interesting for me - also copying this to the thread about hp in case people aren't checking here - sorry if this is the wrong thing to do.

So are we *required* to include two small fandoms in our sign-ups/offers? Or could we just do the one big one, or even two or three big ones?

Also, I'm curious about Number One (the original female first officer of the Enterprise), who appeared only in the Star Trek TOS unaired pilot, "The Cage." "The Cage" was declared ineligible for Yuletide because footage from it was recycled later in the TOS series, but Number One's part was totally axed. Is it possible that she and other women from "The Cage" might be eligible for a small fandom request?

I think a good case can be made for "The Cage" as something totally separate from TOS. The entire cast is different save for Spock, whose character was substantially revised, and even though a small amount of footage was used later in TOS, the plot line was altered and abbreviated. I totally respect your decision either way, but I know I'm not the only fangirl who was sad "The Cage" was not included in Yuletide and who would sign up for it if offered.
