What about fandoms which are ensemble casts (or are just giant)?

For example, I could imagine that even if only 10% of Harry Potter fiction includes Tonks, that there is still a metric fuckton of Tonks-centric fic.

Similarly, if we assume that fic features 2 characters prominently on average and there's a magical fandom where everyone has the same number of fics (which would be 2/n of all fics in that fandom), a fandom with ten or more characters would have all the characters have less than 20% of fics. Again, Harry Potter comes to mind, since there are loads and loads of characters.

Not sure, besides maybe a relative percentage and an absolute number: something like less than 1000 fics on ff.net* or 20% of fics, whichever is smaller for the fandom.

* Number totally pulled out of thin air.

This is an good idea. I'm not sure about the number - partly because the only easy way to look at it is the two characters that are specified (on the assumption that those character feature heavily in the story)
Here are some numbers:
Amelia Bones: 40
Alisa S: 309
Andromeda T: 1,144
Astoria G: 844
Bellatrix: 4,528
Cho C: 1,668
Ginny: 35,804
Susan Bones: 264
Hermione: 97,976
(all counting all stories in English)
There are currently 558,532 stories total for Harry Potter on ff.net.
20% would be 111706.4 stores....

Hope this is useful. It was certainly interesting for me - also copying this to the thread about hp in case people aren't checking here - sorry if this is the wrong thing to do.

Yeah. I don't know what a good number would be, but in Harry Potter's case, I'd certainly want it to be below 10,000, since Ginny shouldn't count as a rare character, even if she's an awesome character.
