We Went to the Zoo

Mar 11, 2008 22:25

Having attained the necessary distance from my zoology hell class - can you believe I've spent nearly a year away from school? - I finally felt ready to take the Boy to the awesome Oakland Zoo (Eureka's Sequoia Park Zoo also qualifies as "awesome," but seemed too small an operation for zoophobia to keep me away).

We didn't necessarily get great ( Read more... )

Looks like fun and such a great day! I really like that last shot! Looks like he's hamming it up.

How does the Oakland Zoo compare to the one in the city? I wasn't at all impressed with the SF zoo. The animals' cages were way too small and they looked like they'd rather be dead than alive. Then again, I'm an ex-San Diego resident and SD's zoo kicks ass.

SF Zoo is so depressing!!! Oakland Zoo is great!

Agreed; I nearly included that distinction in the original entry, but decided to keep things positive. The Oakland Zoo seems especially warm and sunny, which works well for the tropical and subtropical animals they keep there. The animals have room and don't typically look caged - I doubt they have the kind of room they would get in San Diego, but hey, room nonetheless.

I will almost certainly be moving back to the Bay in September, and I'm totally looking forward to accompanying y'all on exciting excursions like this one.

My decsion stems primarily from the complete lack of non-summer parks jobs up here. I could stick around and try my luck but since Chris and I want to move to the Bay eventually anyway, we figured it would be a good idea for me to move first, (hopefully) score a sweet job, live with my parents and save money/pay off debt until he's done up here. We've done long-distance before and it was much worse. At least with this arrangement we can take turns driving to visit the other person on the weekends.

I love the Oakland Zoo. They have like 9 different primates. The spider monkeys and vervets are my favorite.

I didn't see any vervets or spider monkeys, but they did have lemurs and tamarins, which are almost as cool.

Looks like a fine time was had by all. The boy has gotten so big! (He's a natural model, too, it looks like.) Bay Area weather has been fab, hasn't it?

Nice to see your little family thriving. :)

Oh, joy! I thought you had given up on this journal-y stuff, and as indicated in the post preceding this one, I haven't done so great a job of keeping up with those who don't regularly read here.

Tomorrow will actually find me in Palo Alto; I have to get classes ready for their canoe trips. I also work with a recent Stanford alumna. Hopefully you can score yourself "alumna" status before too long and make your way back to the 'Boldt, because while the recent weather here definitely qualifies as fab, nothing beats home. I don't know where to call home anymore, but I bet you do.

Journal up your lively happenings for those of us who actually read religiously when you get a chance!
