Oh Yeah, Wisconsin and Work

Feb 27, 2008 23:20

Such matters have gotten a bit lost in light of recent robberies, but as you may recall, we recently revisited wintry Wisconsin and, even more recently, I returned to work with Save the Bay.

For the most part, we strayed little from the Sister's house in Wisconsin and just enjoyed the company of the Cousins and various other family types that ( Read more... )

I'm going to be in the same position, soon enough, training seasonals and canoe-trippers. Any advice?

Plenty, I suppose ... anything in particular? Will you deal with captive or non-captive audiences?

Speaking of work, do you mind if I ask you random nature questions? Like, the dog poo that I see around here that looks like it's from a medium to large dog that's been eating nothing but dryer lint, that's not really dog poo, is it? I've seen it at least in Round Valley and Las Trampas.

I don't mind at all - I certainly didn't get into this line of work for the money! Ask away, and I'll provide correct answers when possible, and convincing answers when I don't have any correct answers to provide {|;)>

Offhand, that sounds like the leavings of lions - mountain lions, I mean. But I'd need to see the stuff to tell you with certainty - I presume you could take a good picture for me {|;)>

And what the hell, one more winking, bearded ranger face {|;)>

*gulp* My guess was coyote. Although not as sexy as mountian lions, coyote have the undeniable PR advantage of not eating hikers. I've got enough problems with cattle.

Thanks for the answer. I'll take a picture next time.

Two things I want to say:

I used to LOVE it when Justin was up at HSU and I got to pick him up or drive him back. It meant 5 hours together in the car without interruption from others. We got to talk about a lot of stuff but I'm sure he hated it.

Hence he found people to ride with so I didn't come up. Then many of his friends were from SoCal so they would give him a ride to Hayward and spend the night with us on their journey to SoCal. It would usually cost me about $200 to go up, spend the night and drive him back here. When his friends came here it would still cost me $200 by the time I fed them all and as they grew older, bought beer too! I miss those days.

The other thing is about finding opportunities in your job to hone your interp skills. Trust me - you've got the skillz and the passion and it won't be long before someone will notice. Take every advantage to 'impress' whomsoever is paying attention and it will happen!

I'd love to think that Ma joined me out of similar fond feelings, but I suspect instead that she just didn't want her damn fool liberal son plunging into a frozen-death-trap ditch outside of Minong.

And as for the second item, well, duh {|;)>
