i quite liked this episode, as well. but mainly because mordred's just about the only character i can truly stand - he's the only one that feels real to me. (and also, alex is hot.) didn't like cara at all, and the relationship between the two of them seemed awfully one-sided to me, and that just makes me love mordred more
( ... )
but he really is evil now, though. you can tell from the black cape he's wearing in the trailer.
Haha! Yeah, it's obvious he's gone all dark.
Re: Arthur, I think he's had several moments of great character growth throughout the two past series, especially, both in regards to being a good king and his attitude towards magic - the problem is that the writers seem to forget about all that growth every other episode, because their contrived plots require it. Just as their contrived plots require magic staying secret - except that's the one element that's stopping all the characters from growing into what they're supposed to be, and has effectively made proper confrontations like between Merlin and Morgana impossible.
I love the characters, so I tend to ascribe all the parts that make me eyeroll to lazy writing and get annoyed at the writers rather than the characters, but yeah, at this point I just want to take the characters away from the writers and protect them from more bad writing. xD
I haven't actually seen last night's ep yet, but I am so annoyed at the show still not properly addressing whether Arthur is continuing to execute people for magic like his father did. It seems like the laziest sort of storytelling in the world - they're just avoiding the question and so we get a Good King Arthur mostly by glossing over anything that would make us dislike him. It's been over 3 years since he became King - IS HE MURDERING INNOCENT PEOPLE FOR USING CHARMS OR NOT?
As best as I can figure out, he's no longer actively pursuing magic users, but he might convict them if he accidentally trips over them. Or something. Except he did let the druids (and "Dolma") go and there was that lady with the horn at the beginning of this series, although I guess she was dying anyway. Arthur's characterisation tends to be all over the place, though (he seems to progress and regress as required by the plot), and I'm guessing his stance on magic might be, too (probably in part because, if they actually made it clear that Arthur is no longer against magic, they would have no more reason for Merlin to keep his a secret, would they? -_-). The way they danced around it in this ep was particularly ridic.
Yeah, I knew it was going to happen, so I'm glad it happened in a believable way. :D
WHY NOT TWIST THEM TO MAKE ARTHUR LIVE? That is my hope. And dear GOD, if Arthur dies and Merlin is not even there, I will be crushed. I've thought for a very, very long time that no way would they kill Arthur in the finale and that there would definitely be a twist, because it's supposed to be a happy-ish family show, and also because, IMHO, it makes no sense to kill Arthur at this stage (neither Arthur nor Merlin seem to have achieved much of anything yet), but there are so many signs pointing to the contrary that I am basically shaking in my boots. I don't want Arthur to die, Ella. :'( I want to keep imagining a future where Merlin's magic is no longer a secret and they unite Albion together and they go questing together, and ugh. I know we can write canon AUs and all, but still, it's not quite the same if we know for sure that's not how it really happens in canon. So I for one am keeping all my fingers and toes crossed, but I just need to get
