Having actually spent a week in the hospital after inhaling chlorine gas cause by this very thing (while working in the dining hall in college) let me say that you are NOT being melodramatic. However, the water should have washed all the fumes away by now, and they do disperse quickly. The problem arises when one is trapped in a poorly ventilated space and inhales them right then--not by them spreading through the house and killing you. You should be fine.
