Dangar and Rory checked each other’s appearance. They’d come a long way, having ridden from Hobbiton to Michel Delving and now stood apprehensively outside the round door of Lothagar’s hobbit-hole.

“Go ahead and ring,” Rory encouraged, brushing a bit of road dust from Dangar’s sleeve. “It shan’t get any easier standing here.”

Dangar nodded and pulled on the bell cord. There was a distant tinkle, and as they stood side by side waiting Dangar groped nervously for Rory’s hand.

The door jerked opened and Lothagar stood before them. He stared pointedly at their clasped hands then glanced at his son. “Dangar? What is amiss? This isn’t your normal visiting day.”

Dangar blushed and dropped Rory’s hand. “We need to speak to you, Da.”

Lothagar frowned.

“’Tis an important matter, sir,” Rory added.

Lothagar stepped back, inviting them to enter, then led them to his small study. Once there he stared silently at them, obviously waiting.

“Da,” Dangar began. “I… I mean we…,”

“We have something to tell you, sir,” Rory interjected.

Lothagar glanced at him sharply. “And what might that be, young sir?”

Dangar glanced pleadingly at Rory, unable to continue.

“Dangar and I plan to live together…”

Lothagar’s eyebrows rose questioningly.

“…as mates,” Rory finished decisively.

“Dangar, I forbid this!” Lothagar spouted angrily.

“It’s already decided, sir,” Rory said. His voice was low but he spoke with firm resolve. “We ask only for your blessing.”

“You shall never have it!”

“Da!” Dangar implored. “Please!” But Lothagar stalked away.

After a moment the two dejected young Hobbits left and started the long ride home.

“He’ll never approve,” Dangar murmured sadly.

“There’s always hope,” Rory said, reaching to touch his hand.

“Hope,” Dangar whispered sadly. “Yes. I shan’t forget.”

Rory suppressed his anger toward Lothagar with an effort. “Nor shall I.”
