[a while back, Jag asked for Warden!Thomas. It percolated in my brain a while and this sort of resulted. I'm pretty sure it's not the end and it likely needs work but...here you go! In all of its 1811 words glory!]A fairy tale this was not ( Read more... )

Thomas raised his chin defiantly even if what was left of the drug in his system and simple exhaustion conspired to make him hang there just limply, close his eyes and take a nap. He wasn't that weak, though, and he was angry and that lent strength to his limbs.

"Oh, I don't know," he managed to drawl, as if they were having a casual conversation, "I don' tthink we've really got all that much in common."

Even if Thomas was starting to pick out similarities in their appearance.

The immaculately groomed sorcerer just stared at his captive for a moment. It was one of those heavy sorts of glances where you could see that he was absorbing details and filing them away for later.

When he was ready to speak again, the words came out thoughtful and confident. He smiled sardonically at his older brother. "There's no need for you to waste energy posturing. I have you right where I want you and no amount of defiant glares, witty banter or raised jaws are going to make me question it."

Thomas raised his eyebrows, "what would make you question it? It'll save me some time."

One had to admit, the attitude was impressive from someone in his situation.

Perhaps it might if one were easily impressed. Sorcerer Dresden, apprentice to Warden Justin DuMorne, apprentice to Senior Council member Simon Pietrovich, was not such a person.

"Oh I don't know. You, not being bound and held under running water would be a start, Warden Lane."

He forced a smile. "You could always unchain me and I'll show you just that."

Good god, that water was cold. He couldn't suppress the shivering and he hated how weak it made him look. As if the rest of his predicament didn't do that as well.

"You'll be released when I'm finished." It was kind of hard to not to emphasize the last bit of that particular statement. He did very much like to be in control and it was even more fun when the victims knew it.

"I expect you're wondering why I haven't killed you yet."

"The thought had crossed my mind once or twice."

It had to be much easier to just kill him outright, after all, than go to all this effort.

He was still ignoring the implications of Dresden's earlier comments.

"We can help each other, you and I." He said looking right at his prisoners eyes, unflinching. "I can open your eyes to a great many things and if clarity doesn't interest you, perhaps vengeance will. I offer you both."

Thomas broke the gaze first, turning his eyes to look up at the ceiling. Dresden's soul was one he had no desire to look upon and have to remember in detail until he died. Even if that wasn't so far in the future as he might have wished.

"You're joking, right? What the hell can you offer me?"

The raven haired warlock blinked for a moment, thinking he had made himself clear a moment ago. He took a deep breath, trying to be patient with his victim, who was likely disoriented and adversely affected by the cold water.

"I want to help you Thomas. You can be so much more than what you are now. I can help you find your way though the fog that the council has put you in. Help you become a better wizard ... or providing that doesn't interest you, maybe you might want in on a strike against the White King."

He wasn't exactly thinking straight. But he was trying! Of course, a lot of that trying was trying to think of how to get out of this alive and intact.

Thomas blinked, "fog? What, the Council's the bad guys because they object to the things you do?"

But he couldn't bring himself to scoff at that last part. Not when he had fantasized far too many times about how to destroy the man he'd once called father.

"Spend a little time with me, brother. I guarantee you'll lean a few things you didn't know before." He said with a razor thin smile.

His eyes narrowed. "My name. Is Thomas."

But he also wasn't seeing any other way of getting out of this alive and in one piece. He could always consider it an undercover operation.

As long as the rest of the Council didn't find out.

"Let me go, then. I'll stick around a while."

"Of course ... Thomas."

He turned his back to the wizard, heading for the door.

"Justine will be here in a moment to release you. Don't bother looking for me, I'll find you when it's time for us to speak again."

Was it really that easy?

Damn.

"Yeah, that totally wasn't following the cryptic evil warlock stereotype there."

"Maybe." He hedged, back still turned to the helpless warden in his trap. "It's a shame you cant keep the untaintable hero stereotype."

And without waiting for him to reply, he exited.
