I forgot to update on this in a timely manner, but everything turned out fine. We took it outside and it flew away. Matei clapped with the rest of us before bursting into tears about the buuuuuuuuuurdd
I have to say that the rescue was made possible by the half-assed attitude of the cats who were all "You wish to torment and eat this excellent bird yourself, Human Woman? Be our guest! We shall lie here and flick our tails in the sunlight instead!"
We ended up toughing it out, and waiting for him to wake up before doing the catch-and-release. Happily the bird was able to fly away on its own, and his sadness at its loss "Come back buuuuuuuuurd!" was only temporary.

Perhaps you can tell M it escaped, or that it's mum came to get it?

Yes, tell Matei that the birdie's mommy came to get him.

I was fobbed off with 'it ran away' as child. Didn't stop the grief but no evil-mama blaming :)
