Ok, you know, I know all those "Copy and paste this in your journal if you care about X!" memes mean well, and in some cases they serve an important purpose in making X more visible to the community at large. HOWEVER, it pisses me the hell off when the text of the meme implies that if you don't copy and paste the meme, then you're an uncaring lout ( Read more... )

I feel much the same. I'll debate and discuss the issues, but copying and pasting a meme is like a glorified chain letter. And they never work out well.

They irritate me mildly. They're just spam. They serve no purpose, especially on LJ where it's a pretty much a given that your f-list will be pro-gay rights and the cancer one...well, is there anyone alive who doesn't know or have known someone close who died of cancer? I seriously doubt it. But what good does posting about it DO?

But what if I AM an uncaring lout who hopes that those affected by X drown in a sewer while I torture their puppy and laugh like Snidely Whiplash at their dying gurgles?

If no one posts the memes, how will our flists differentiate us Snidelies from the people who just don't feel like posting a meme? I suppose we could create our own meme, but we're far too busy torturing puppies.

I'm not the only one on my flist who modified the meme to make it less of a chain letter. This gives me hope.

Yay? Yeah, I'm an old "cut off my nose to spite my face" person from way back, so something that implies I HAVE to do it? So not happening. Your point about doing something concrete rather than giving lip service is a good one.
