Gay Marriage Will Lead to Anarchy

Former New York Giants wide receiver David Tyree believes gay marriage will lead to anarchy

Shockingly, he blames Obama, and ignores single parents everywhere.

Comments on the article are surprisingly mixed, but I still don't recommend reading them if you value your blood pressure.

homophobia, sports, oh god shut the fuck up

Odd how the poll on the side is phrased -- the question is "Did David Tyree go too far with his comments regarding gay marriage?"

And the choices are

-Yes. Although he's entitled to his beliefs, he shouldn't have been so vocal about it.
or
-No. He can say whatever he wants to about the issue and shouldn't be criticized for it.

How about "He can say whatever he wants about the issue but should face the consequences of his words, which are essentially hate speech?"

shouldn't be criticized for it

shouldn't be criticized

Why the fuck doesn't anyone understand the first amendment anymore? Yes, he can say whatever the fuck he wants to as long as it's not slander or libel or some kind of false advertising or making unsubstantiated medical claims about Acai berries or whatever. Homophobia not falling into one of these categories, he is technically protected by the law and cannot be censored. Fine. Whatever. But that doesn't mean I can't still call him a fucking homophobic douchebag. Because that's what he is. He's a fucking homophobic douchebag. And I'll criticize him all day if I want to, because I HAVE RIGHTS TOO.

Fuck, why does everyone forget that?

"This is what I do know," he said. "You can't teach something that you don't have. So two men will never be able to show a woman how to be a woman. That's just, for lack of better terms, common sense."

Oh, heaven forfend that someone might be raised without strict adherence to societal gender roles.

Shut the fuck up with your "how to be a woman", dudebro.

By that logic, he's also saying that single fathers can't raise daughters properly, same with single mothers who have sons. ...I wonder what the reaction would be if someone pointed that out to him.

Ironically, according to Wikipedia, he was raised by a divorced mother. I guess that's different, though. Somehow.

He sounds like a bigoted idiot. He can say what he likes, but why should I listen to the spewings of a bigoted, homophobic fool?

"How can marriage be marriage for thousands of years and now all of a sudden because a minority -- an influential minority -- has a push or an agenda and totally reshapes something that was not founded in our country?" Tyree said.

Oh, you mean like interracial marriage? 'Cause that's only been legal in all 50 states since 1967.

"We're doing God an injustice by not making his heart known to our country."

And naturally, he knows God's heart! God's always dropping in at the Tyree residence for little heart-to-heart chats with this guy! He must be really special!

That's what I was coming here to say. And the arguments against interracial marriage were the same as the ones being used against gay marriage, essentially.

And I also wonder where the hell he gets the idea that marriage hasn't changed at all in "thousands of years". Setting aside all the different cultural reasons and meanings of marriage, it generally was about a man buying the right to have sex with a woman of the same race and religion via a dowry and a ceremony. A woman who was regarded as a piece of property and had no say in the matter. And who might be sharing the title of soandso's wife with multiple other women. Oh, and who might also be a prepubescent child. Not to mention all the times it was more for political reasons, and rarely had anything to do with love.

And in some places, it still IS at least some if not all of those things. The whole "two consenting adults who can very well be of mixed race and religion agreeing to enter a long-term commitment full of legal benefits out of love" thing is a pretty damn modern
