But Fairfax officials assert that the staff members in Andrew's special education classroom are able to do everything Alaya can to respond to emergencies and ensure the boy's safety.

Why do I highly doubt that?

The dog also doesn't have its attention split between 20+ other students at the same time.

GDI.

I expected this to be some sort of sensible argument, like another child in the class was deathly allergic to dogs. Instead there is this fuckery.

Even if the child is unable to handle the dog, isn't it the school's responsibility to provide a handler?

don't know abt the school providing a handler, but really, they're basing it on the fact that the boy is ACADEMICALLY at a kindergarten level.

give me a fucking break.

Oh, but a GPA is directly proportional to one's overall maturity and life skills. That's why nobody with a low GPA ever makes anything of themselves, amirite?

I really detest academic instructors who get so into the whole thing that they forget there's more to a person than whether or not they turned in their homework on time. Is that person a bad student? Yes. Are they an inept in any other way? You have no idea. Nice assumptions, though.

Personally, I'm picturing someone with a 4.0 having magical dog-whispering powers in this scenario.

A not so ragey update... lolcoaster January 5 2011, 07:35:32 UTC
According to this-> http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/01/04/AR2011010405680.html?nav=hcmoduletmv School officials say he and his dog can attend school on a two week trail basis...on the condition that his dad(who took two weeks leave from the Army for this) accompany them.

I believe the boy and his dog will pass with flying colors...yet fear that the shit for brains school officials will come up with some other excuse not to let him bring Alaya to school.

well that's good but this is still bullshit. the father should not have to beg the Army for two weeks' leave because the school wants to break the law.

i really hope the family has a lawyer on standby cuz i fear you are right...the school will manufacture some other excuse or use the dog startling at a loud noise (i.e. a kid with a mental disability yelling at complete random) as the "reason".

I never get these things.

Exactly what goes through the school's head when they announce "Yeah, you know that ADA thing? We don't think we're going to follow it." How exactly do they think this is going to end?

Service dogs are so well trained and go through intense training. It's not like the child is going to bring in a dog that's jumping on everyone and wanting to play play play. This is def a violation of ADA. It's a shame the dad has to take a leave to try to prove this.
