there is a girl on my friends list who adopted a retired greyhound - she might have some good insight on the process - her username is thiscantbesoy . i know that she had an "adjustment" period when the dog first arrived - we had that with lucy too - I think any time you adopt a dog, there will be some adjusting and behavior to work out.
I'm glad to have you as a resource. Yes, I need to check out this book about retired racers. Luckily, she's been in a home for a little while, so she's started to make the change. I know now that it takes 6 weeks to see the real dog and get situated. I really want it to work out! I will look at your friend. Thanks!
I used to work at a credit union in Redmond and we had a few people who brought their retired greyhounds in. They are really sweet and mellow. They would just lean in to you and love attention. I would be weary of an alpha dog though...? It can effect what you do with your dog more than you think. For example you probably won't be able to take her to Marymoore off leash park. She also might not get along with the neighborhood dogs. It can be very stressful to have a dog who doesn't like other dogs. I am not trying to talk you out of it but just from experience I would think about those things. They are very sweet though!! Good luck!
No, I don't think Greyhounds are all alpha but the link that you sent about Stirrup said that she thinks she is alpha. So that usually means that she will sometimes have trouble getting along with other dogs if they challenge her on that. I probably shouldn't have said she "doesn't like other dogs" because that isn't necessarily the case. I am sure you are doing a lot of research on the breed so it will be fine. I am actually surprised she would be alpha based on how timid I have seen the breed before. Sorry about the confusion. Tab
I'm an idiot! I see what you mean now that I re-read it. Yeah, she's been in foster for a month and she does fine with the other three dogs. She's fine with dogs on a leash too. I'm not sure why they said that in the post, but I definitely will be asking. Thanks for noticing. It's been a couple weeks since I read it. :) Oops!
oooh! greyhounds are beautiful. there are a couple of fantastic ones that hang out at the Genessee dog park. they are very sweet dogs (from my limited experience)
p.s. i am one of janaya's friends, and i think we have all the same 'livejournal' friends. i am going to add you if it is okay, i'm looking for a few more journals to read :)
i think that this is a way better choice than an expensive purebread. she might have been a great dog, but there is no need to spend such a giant amount, especially when you can rescue a dog who needs a home.
i go to the dog park once or twice a day and greyhounds are some of my favorite dogs. they can be pretty aloof/uninterested to starngers, but they are very loving and sweet with their families.
also, while they are capable of running really fast, they are pretty lazy and mellow around the house dogs - a good choice as other family commitments might prevent you from exercising a dog for 30 minutes to an hour every day.
(my coonhound requires a good hour of running each day or she tends to get very destructive. i love her to death, but sometimes she drives me CRAZY.)
Make sure that she is well trained and will listen when you call her. Because they are REALLY fast and can run after something and get a fair distance away before anyone realizes it.
