Thirty Years Ago today...

Mount St. Helens exploded in Washington State.  I was a senior in high school in Spokane, Washington and we were blanketed in ash.  It's something I'll never forget.  It was a very scary time because we didn't know what was going to happen next - would the other volcanoes in the Cascade Mtns. explode, was the ash really dangerous, etc.  The Spokane ( Read more... )

That was such a shocking event... I remember thinking at the time how awful it must have been for the people living in that region. It's hard to believe that it was 30 years ago.

It was really strange and scary at the time, but it's sort of cool to look back on it now and think, wow, I went through something like that! :)

I was in 10th grade when it happened, and we followed it on the news. I visited in 1994 and was amazed to see the damage -and new growth.

I follow the USGS earthquakes page and noted that there was a small but significant quake near Mt Hood the other day. There are not that many there, but I know the 'experts' really worry about the serious damage the lahars would do to the valley there - and how many people might be trapped and killed - if Mt Hood ever blew. I hope not in our lifetimes, if not ever.

Yes, going up to Mount St. Helens is amazing... it really has come back to life in lots of ways - much faster than any of the scientists ever thought would happen.

Mt. Hood could cause quite a bit of damage to Portland and those areas, but I think that one of the bigger concerns would be Mt. Rainier because of it's proximity to the Seattle area. Either of them would be horrible and I have family in both places. :(
