This extremely funny and well-characterized Regency romantic comedy was the novel which got me hooked on Heyer, and it's still one of my favorites. I also think it's objectively one of her best ( Read more... )

Bingo. One of the few Heyers I can still reread with a great deal of pleasure.

I remember first reading it when I was a teenager, thinking maybe halfway through that I ought to like Jack, because he was the hero, but geez, I really kinda preferred Freddy, and why didn't anyone notice that he's not nearly as stupid as everyone keeps saying he is?

Hugh! Yes, he's also very appealing. I've always wished she had written a sequel wherein he would find true love, and also knock someone down. *g*

Freddy is my favorite Heyer hero. I remember thinking as I read this one, "Heyer's not really going to do it? Oh wait. She is! Hurrah!"

I've always loved Freddy, and I was so grateful when Kitty came to her senses, because I'd been bracing to have to throw the book across the room and whimper. Kitty and Freddy are one of the few couples I can think of in romance whose marriage would not only last, but last happily.
