Things have, of course, been extremely busy and chaotic at Sectus Ground Zero, and I've not had sufficient time for an in-depth update. I still don't. But I'm SO FUCKING EXCITED right now, and I just have to update with a quick statement. No spoilers; just something general here ( Read more... )

OK, aside from that little matter about the deaths (and you know how much stock I set by that, anyway), I think DH has given us some wonderful new canon to work with. I mean, House Elves can Apparate with people? Mutliple people? Hello Escape from DE Dungeons fics. Stuff on the Goblins? Wizarding fairy tales and fables? The whole Deathly Hallows thing she came up with just makes me salivate. All the incredible background on Dumbledore! And especially on Dumbledore's relationship with Snape! God, *I* might even have to write some SS/AD after this book ( ... )

I'm actually still in the process of reading the book thoroughly for plot/comprehension, but yeah -- we have a TON of new material to work with. I'm not AT ALL worried about any of my favorite pairings. Hmm... I think I might email you with some of my thoughts soon...

Yeah, I agree that all fic is AU by nature, and I'm not bothered by that. It seems that less of the fandom is bothered by AU than I originally believed, as well. And EWE (Epilogue? What Epilogue?) FTW!

I guess I didn't hate the epilogue as much as other folks, tho it certainly didn't tell me everything I wanted to know about all the characters. But that's OK. I'd really rather not know, in some cases. I do love Albus Severus, however, and Harry's comment about him.

And for all the people who were moaning about leaving fandom in anticipation of DH, I really haven't seen anyone doing it yet. Rather than kill fandom, DH seems to have excited everyone. We want to play with canon and we want to divert from canon. And I don't seem to be the only one with the opinion that now that JKR is done with the series, it's *our* playground now. :-D

Well, it's going to take a long time to get the sour taste of Book 7 out of my mouth. The Tarantino/Peckinpah-style deaths made the lame epilogue suck even more, by contrast.

I've spent years trying to get my screenwriting students to understand the difference between killing and not killing as a substitute for true drama. It's a never-ending battle. It's always easier to blow away a bunch of characters rather than take them to the brink and do something truly inspired and unexpected. The cruelty was never-ending and exhausted me.

I had a wonderful gang of LJ friends staying over my place for a book party weekend. They all loved the book and wept at the deaths. But they all agreed that the book wasn't "just about the deaths."

Well, if that's true...why did we need them?

The courageous decision would have been NOT to gleefully call your book a bloodbath. I realize I'm in the minority here, but the entire series is now officially a darkfic.

And I've read better darkfics by fanfic writers.

Yeah, I tend to agree that most of the deaths were rather gratuitous. What purpose did any of them really serve, other than to (pointlessly) prove that people die in war ( ... )

Did I mention that I probably need a hug?

On the bright side, we all took a break from reading and walked up the street to catch the late showing of "Hairspray."

It made us laugh a lot...so I was sort of reminded of that wonderful movie-watching scene in the old classic "Sullivan's Travels."

*sigh*

What, you mean you'll start playing with me again?

I think what really happened was that he was CLOSE to the end, and Tha swept in and saved him. Cause she does that sort of thing....heehee.

I READ IT and good grief, you're so right. No matter what one liked best about the series, there's something to work with.... or a great gaping hole that needs to be filled.

Oh yes... this is definitely The Fandom That Lived.

*is bricked but doesn't care because I READ THE BOOK*
