This is a beautiful piece, the kind that lulls you into rhythm and you can't stop reading because it's so mesmerizing. I loved the witch character, and Haku is wonderful here, proud, arrogant, and still naive. He is childish in his pride, and you can definitely see parts of that from the anime itself, though I think at that point he's learned his lesson, and is a lot softer there.

Overall, this is the kind of history I crave to read. There's definitely a sense of folk tales and campfire to it, which I like in this fic. All in all, wonderful.

Thank you (from both of us, I'm sure, as soon as I drag Muri out of her box...)

I'm glad you liked the fairytale nature of the story, since that's what we were going for.

...did you recognize who the witch was?

I thought Zeniba when I read it, but then felt more unsure. It could also be someone I'd never heard of before, haha.

This is gorgeous! I love the back and forth exchange--it sounds just like all those tales of bargains between the protagonist and the witch. My curiosity grew as Haku's did, and the image of the witch talking to the dragon by the river seizes the imagination. Very smooth, with lovely turns of phrase.

Thank you! It's one of those stories that has a certain cadence meant to evoke the realm of Grimm's Stories, I think. And the lovely turns of phrase are all thanks to Muri's wonderfully poetic style.
