Can you really see?
”Can you really see?”
You asked me that once, Akaya, while we wee watching Tezuka's match. It was insulting really. Good thing for you, I wasn't one of the easily insulted people. That and I didn't have your temper for mine.
”Can you really see?”
So many have asked that question of yours, even Genichiroh and Seiichi asked that the first time we met. The only person who didn't ask that was Sadaharu. But then again, in some aspects regarding vision, Sadaharu and I were similar. Neither one of us revealed our eyes.
It was a barrier, I think, for the both of us. There's a saying that the eyes are the windows to the soul. Sadaharu and I were afraid that no one could ever understand our souls. We were different, that we knew.
”Can you really see?”
I wanted to ask you back what you thought, the way I had answered people before. But instead, I didn't even say anything. It was as if I ignored you completely and didn't even hear you.
”Can you really see?”
I was born with light-sensitive eyes, Akaya. Even when I was a child, I was taught to use my other senses for vision rather than to use my eyes. It was, yes, hard at first. I was a child, how could I understand that if I didn't use my eyes less frequently, I'd be blind for life?
But I tried. I practiced. And as years went on, I practically didn't need my eyes anymore. I had learned not to rely on them. I had learned to live without them.
Yet, Akaya, I can see. How else do you think I have become a data tennis player without me seeing anything? I can see, Akaya. I can see with my other senses. I can see with my heart.
I can see you, Akaya.
I can see that child that you try so hard to hide with an over confident and tough mask. I can see how hard you have been working so as not to disappoint your family, Genichiroh, Seiichi… yourself. I can see the hurdles you must've gone through, the fears you know you must overcome. I can see the unshed tears, the scars you try to hide. I can see the strength you want to acquire; not only physical and mental, but emotional strength as well.
Did you know that I could see that, Akaya?
There's a ninety-nine percent chance you didn't.
So your question, Akaya, should not be for me. You should ask yourself that question. But when you do, don't use your eyes. Close them for they can trick you and show you illusions you can very well live without.
Use your heart. And perhaps, you'll be able to see me as well.
Because, Akaya, I can very well see you… with my heart.
