Chapter 8

“It’s no use!”

Sakito threw the sheets to the ground in frustration, discarding his hairdryer and huffing as it continued to doggedly blow hot air onto the carpet. He patted his hand on his mattress, as if by some miracle the deep seeping of water from Hitsugi’s wet dog had disappeared. It hadn’t.

Maintaining his firm hold on the terrier, whose boundless energy had earned her the name ‘Turbo’, Hitsugi bent to flick the switch of the rejected appliance, the room falling into silence as the overpowering whoosh of it died with a sudden finality.

“You can take them to the dry-cleaners in the morning. We could go top to toe for now…”

Before he could stop himself, Ni~ya burst in.

“He can share with me! … I mean, it’s the dog’s first night here… won’t it want to sleep with you…?”

After a moment of surprise, Hitsugi nodded happily in oblivious agreement.

“Yeah, Turbo had better stay on my bed. It’ll only be for one night anyway”

Sakito nodded, praying his face was not as flushed as it felt as he turned to busy himself with the pretence of rearranging the nearest tabletop, a tensely nervous, yet somehow pleasant knot tightened its coils deep in the pit of his stomach.

The three soon found that getting Turbo to sleep was not such a simple endeavour and she was still pottering aimlessly around in weaving loops when a tartan-clothed Hitsugi slipped resolutely underneath his duvet. He flicked the switch above, knowing that it would be some time until the bathroom fan stopped whirring and
Sakito finished his meticulous cleansing routine. Indeed Ni~ya was sure that under normal circumstances, he would have been drifting into a deep sleep by the time he heard soft footsteps padding their way across the floor and Sakito slid into the confined space, his natural grace infiltrated by awkwardness at the still unfamiliar reeling that accompanied the prospect of their sharing such close contact.

The moment his back hit the mattress Sakito felt Ni~ya reaching for his form, moving with a confidence leant by a hungry impatience that seemed natural despite its fresh birth. Without the slightest hint of resistance he let himself be drawn forward, burying his face into the washed out the other slept in until his senses were deliciously assailed by the musky, vaguely flowery cologne ingrained into the worn material. Ni~ya’s hands worked their way across him absent-mindedly, languidly drawing the textile that housed his abdomen upwards, fingertips dancing across the delicate skin of his waist, making the hypersensitive membrane twitch away even as his mind leaned desperately into the touch.

The contact swept over him like the rushing and receding of summer waves at the shore, and his lips parted slightly to release a moan, a sigh, a whimper, and conveyable means to unleash his sensations into the tantalisingly quiet darkness; but in sudden realisation he forced back the formation of the sound. He and Ni~ya were, regrettably, not the sole inhabitants of the world. Slow inhalations, heavy with sleep, from the other side of the room penetrated their isolation, pushing them both into a swift fall down to reality. Reluctantly, Ni~ya smoothed the folds of Sakito’s shirt down, pushing aside the untried, foreign craving with all the firmness he could muster and pressing him further into his own body until his breath clouded hotly against his neck.

For long moments that stretched out unbearably into the darkness, they remained still and silent, until Sakito raised his voice, the tone a trembling note above a whisper.

“I’ll tell her.”

Ni~ya stirred, unveiling his gaze to find it captured by Sakito’s eyes, trembling with faint, reflected light that seeped from some indefinable location within the dim room. He spoke again, dropping to an undertone.

“Leiko. I’ll tell her I’m not seeing her anymore. Tomorrow.”

Ni~ya’s features relaxed into a gratified smile, mirrored by his partner before his eyelids fluttered closed and he rested his head barely inches from Ni~ya’s. He looked blissfully peaceful and innocent, a neglected child falling without reserve into the arms of his saviour. It was long after his breathing and shallowed and lengthened, his features loosening in the blessing of respite, that Ni~ya finally dragged himself away from his scrutinisation of the flawlessly angelic countenance. Pressing a chaste yet unwavering kiss to unresponsive lips, he allowed his own consciousness to drift away, wondering lethargically of what events would have come to pass had their ardent flesh been unseparated by deadening barriers of cloth.

When Ni~ya awoke, Sakito was still encapsulated loosely in his arms, his eyes partly open and fractionally upturned towards him. On seeing the other’s vision being blearily unveiled his face lit up, his tousled hair brushing teasingly against Ni~ya’s chin as he nuzzled his head into the warmly reassuring scent of his chest, before pausing as the sound of voices made his pupils dart to the corner of their confines.

“No- Yomi! Look, just go away for a bit okay!”

It was Hitsugi’s voice, and Sakito felt his muscles clench as he realised that his friend surely must have noticed them… like this. But then again, did it matter? He opened his mind cautiously, delving into the emotions that he had been carefully setting aside from analysis. The waveringly thin attachments that had bound him to Ni~ya had strengthened, seeming like a wall in comparison, though he still felt as if he was barely balanced as he walked tightrope along it. Perhaps it was right for Hitsugi to know of these quickly fortifying foundations. In any case, he would have given it no longer than another day for Yomi to blurt out his suspicions.

“I can’t! Ruka’s got a hangover and Wongy is getting all hyped up over exams. Anyway, I wanna see Romeo and Juliet!”

With that final announcement he burst into the room, releasing a peal of glee as Ni~ya and Sakito both jerked upright, landing entwined upon the floor as they impulsively tried to escape from the bed. Before he could release any jibes from his perverted mind however, Hitsugi hauled him back out by the arm.

“Yomi is going to come dog-walking with me.”

He announced forcefully, ignoring the groan of dismay that came from the corridor and scooping up Turbo, leaving the tangled pair thoughtfully and thankfully alone.

After a moment of silence to ensure their departure, Sakito released a slightly embarrassed laugh and Ni~ya grinned, his body tilted just above Sakito’s. As the mirth died he leaned forward, capturing Sakito’s mouth with his own, a faint smile still hovering over his features as he applied a tender pressure to his soft lips, feeling Sakito shiver as he returned the gesture eagerly. He raised a hand, cupping his delicate cheek before lifting his palm to trail his fingers subtly over the line of his jaw, tracing his way down to the collarbone as he nudged gently between Sakito’s teeth, the other giving way instantaneously.

Eventually, he pulled away, his lightly clad thigh brushing tantalisingly against Sakito’s as he stood up, the sensation squirming its way upwards to set off jangling bells behind his eyes. With a hint of reluctance, the brunette straightened his prone form, running a hand through his dishevelled locks and blinking the remains of sleep from his eyes. He moved the few steps towards his chest of drawers, grabbing a pair of jeans and a top with barely a second glance- hardly usual behaviour for the fashion-conscious Sakito. Noticing Ni~ya’s curious look, he smiled happily.

“No use in making myself look good for her!”

Ni~ya had barely remembered the proposition from the previous night, and its recollection practically made his heart sing. With unconditional shyness Sakito shuffled into the bathroom, emerging as beautiful as always despite his careless garment choice and unstyled hair. It was already late in the morning and there seemed to be no reason to delay the event, so he grabbed his somewhat effeminate shoulder bag from the corner of his room, checking for his phone and usual assortment of necessities before throwing Ni~ya a final beam, hiding his nervousness with the thought of removing the obstacle that Leiko provided.

“I’ll call her up on the way, be back before you know it!”

No more than half an hour later, Sakito was seated at a regular meeting spot of theirs, his foot tapping in involuntary anxiety. He wanted to get this over with as soon as possible, and it was not like Leiko to be late… Almost as soon as the thought passed through his head he spotted her among the crowd and immediately wished that his wait could have been longer, that he had at least developed some notion of what he was going to say on the journey here…

As she approached he noticed a stony expression on her face, but she concealed it as she got nearer, applying an exuberantly fake smile. Taking a steadying breath, he looked up, and her counterfeit light spirits sobered instantly.

“I don’t want to see you anymore.”

For a split second, he fancied he saw true hurt clouding her eyes, but she quickly composed herself, building up a cold and cruel exterior.

“I see, running off to your little lover boy Ni~ya are you?”

Sakito almost choked.

“Wha-! How did-“

She cut through his stuttering smoothly, her tongue a barb of ice.

“So it IS true...”

Her words were bristling with an emotionless cruelty, off-hand, but within her glacial chassis she was seething. For months he had been securely wrapped around her little finger, falling into the ‘treat them mean, keep them keen’ cliché as her friends had assured her they all would. And now he was sneaking into an illicit relationship with some… guy. The thought of this faceless ape fumbling around with Sakito, the Sakito she had been so sure was hers, made her feel revoltingly sick. Whatever the cost, she was not going to let that happen.

“Well you know, that’s a real shame, because I guess I’m going to have to go to that party next Saturday on my own. I’ve heard that half of your school will be there! I hope they won’t be too upset when I tell them you’re too busy cosying up with your precious boyfriend to show your face! Of course, I’m sure your mother will be delighted to hear about your new love, I can’t wait to break the news to her!”

She watched Sakito’s face falling with a vindictive pleasure as the honeyed words rolled of her tongue, his spirits sinking further and further as he comprehended the threat until he could barely utter the few, defeated syllables.

“… I’ll come.”

Twisting her mouth into a sugary smirk at the triumph, she answered sweetly, her voice laced with sarcasm.

“Great! You can pick me up at seven. Of course, its probably best if you get a little less cuddly with “Romeo” now, it’s not fair to hide away such a perfect couple, huh?”

Sakito wanted to scream, to slap that self-satisfied simper from her face or at least beat some backbone into himself, but all he could do was nod. Vaguely, he knew she was nattering, excusing herself to buy an outfit for the coming weekend, but her last sentence was all he could hear, replaying over and over in his mind.

Romeo…. Yomi…!

***

Ni~ya had to restrain himself from jumping to his feet as he heard the handle creaking downwards. Hitsugi had returned from his walk hours ago, burdened down with pet accessories whilst Turbo pranced around proudly in her new crimson collar. Thankfully, he had asked no questions on their behaviour that morning, accepting it with a benevolent tolerance; as if discovering his friends had developed into potential lovers was an utterly normal thing to wake up to. The minutes had dragged out, and Ni~ya’s attempts to distract himself had failed one after the other, surely such a task should have come to and end long ago, yet Sakito did not return.

In fact, in the wake of the encounter he could not bear to go back to Ni~ya’s enthusiasm. He had wandered aimlessly, becoming more and more desolate and frustrated as his searches for some fix-all solution to his problem continued to terminate at dead ends. He could barely believe the things she had said, but no matter how hard he prayed for it he did not awaken, safe within Ni~ya’s arms from a terrible dream. It was real, and he could think of no way to escape the situation without throwing himself into a circle of cold-eyed condemnation. He knew only too well what his conventional schoolmates would think of him and Ni~ya. They might as well stone him as a witch or something and get it over and done with…

Ni~ya’s glee at Sakito’s arrival dissolved abruptly at the sight of his downcast expression, and Hitsugi looked up in surprised concern. Sakito burned ashamedly beneath their worried stares, and as if he had been taken lessons on it from the very girl he despised, he straightened himself, feeling a blur of tears recede as he assumed a distant demeanour, turning away to kick his shoes off. Ni~ya moved forward hesitantly, reaching out a hand that he did not dare use for fear of rejection.

“Saki… What happened?”

For a moment his troubled tone almost broke through the façade, but Sakito regathered himself, studying the floor intently.

“I’m going out with Leiko next Saturday.”

Even though he could not see it, the expression he knew would be on Ni~ya’s face pulverised him, and he lurched suddenly towards his now dry bed, burying himself in the duvet. In the smothering, unnatural darkness he squeezed his eyes shut, feeling hot tears slipping through his lashes regardless, biting down on his lip until the rusty tang stained his tongue with bitterness.
