Chapter 6

When Sakito awoke on Sunday morning, the sun was shining too brightly through the window and his head thick and pounding with fatigue. He screwed his face up in an attempt to shield his eyes from the glancing light and shifted his weight over, wincing as his muscles groaned achingly. Ni~ya was lying on the next bed, but propped up on his elbows and studying a copy of Romeo & Juliet, looking enviously awake. He contemplated getting up for a moment, but the very thought made his body throb in protest and he was reluctant to disturb his roommate. There was nothing to stir himself for anyway, and so he was content to wallow in as many moments of comfort as he could possibly steal from the fresh day.

His eyes still slightly open in order to adjust to their surroundings, he found himself watching Ni~ya as he flipped through the pages intently, concentrating on the complex linguistics. His expression was absorbed, yet relaxed and calm, his eyes soft as they trailed words across the paper, and his mouth parted occasionally, to slowly renew the moisture that so quickly evaporated from his lips. His silvery blonde hair hung over his face slightly, though obviously at an angle that did not interrupt his vision as he made no move to redistribute the strands. The vivid rays that flooded the room, paining and irritating Sakito’s still recovering metabolism, looked contrastingly beautiful silhouetting the lustrous, platinum tresses, making them thrill with a sparkling golden light.

His gaze travelled along slightly, drinking in the contrast of his pale, slender arms against the faded black tank top he had thrown on, and the curve of his back as the material followed the example set by his spine flawlessly. A small area of his hip had been exposed where the unravelling hem had flipped upwards and Sakito felt his eyes zoning in on the porcelain skin before he snapped them away with a deep blush that was thankfully unseen. He wasn’t going to think like that. He wouldn’t let himself.

He closed his eyes firmly, burrowing his face into the duvet and almost shivering at the lethargic pleasure of it. It would be such a blissful pleasure to just wrap himself up in the down-filled blankets and just never move again. To not even bother to raise his head as day after day of perplexity flew by, and to sleep without worries of school, of Leiko, of Ni~ya and his confusing intents plaguing his mind.

But of course, Sakito happened to know Yomi.

The sound of the small boy bouncing in like an elephant brought Sakito jarringly back into reality, and he unveiled his vision blearily again to see him wresting Ni~ya’s book away joyfully ignoring the affronted cry and grasping hand that followed the action.

“O Sakito, Sakito! Wherefore art thou Sakito?
What's in a name? That which we call a bab
By any other name would look as orgasmic!-”

His reading was interrupted as Ni~ya emitted an incredulous splutter, looking up at Yomi in alarm, who sniggered.

“The original was a bit boring, just adding some-“

“I know that, but what- how- … Sakito?!”

Yomi’s grin widened even further, if that was even possible, and he threw Ni~ya a wink.

“Don’t worry, I won’t tell a soul!”

Ni~ya’s mouth dropped open and he stared up in disbelief, until Yomi burst into laugher.

“HAHA! You actually have the hots for Saki?! I was only joking!!”

Ni~ya’s face went through a million changes of confusion and denial, before he snatched his text back and buried himself into it, his face burning.

“Ni~ya…?”

Yomi’s voice had an abnormal hint of seriousness as he poked the other’s arm, biting his lip rather guiltily.

“I didn’t mean… He’s still asleep anyway…”

“Piss off.”

For once in his life Yomi was silenced. He exited the room, leaving Ni~ya to blink back hot, embarrassed tears as Sakito stared, his heart thrumming and his eyes wide.

It was not until Ni~ya had dazedly read the same line over 30 times that he was once again interrupted, this time by a sleepy looking Hitsugi, entering with a yawn before flopping himself onto his bed contentedly.

“Sorry, Crufts special features were on late all night, I think I fell asleep after.”

He explained before either could question his presence, smiling brightly.

“The Pomeranian won best of group!! And the fly ball was amazing! I really wanted the other team to win though ‘cause they had the sweetest Border Collie with a wall eye but then he missed the ball and they only came second! I can’t wait for the finale tonight! It’s a good job there’s no Crufts tomorrow, I would have missed it!! I guess you two were getting ready for the D of E trip last night, yeah?”

Ni~ya looked up in surprise, and Sakito snapped out of his pretend slumber.

“What trip?!”

Hitsugi raised his eyebrows as the two cried out in near unison.

“Camping on Crook’s Peak! All the teachers have been going on about it for ages you two!”

When their faces remained blank he turned over and stuck a hand into his neatly organised bedside drawer, pulling out an equipment list and throwing it at Ni~ya.

“You’d best get ready- And fast!! I suppose I had better go check on Yomi… if you two forgot, I don’t hold much hope for him…”

He flustered away down the corridor, leaving Ni~ya to read the list with a slowly growing expression of horror.

“Walking boots… Macintosh… WATERPROOF TROUSERS?!”

Ni~ya groaned, turning over and over in a vain attempt to find a comfortable patch of the cold plastic to sleep on and shivering fitfully despite his thick sleeping back and layer upon layer of ever item of clothing he had stuffed into his bag the day before. After carting the bedraggled group of boys through the biting rain, their ever overenthusiastic teacher had picked them “tent mates” at random, and Ni~ya had been lumped with two lacklustre English guys he had never even spoken to before, and of course the real plus was that one of them appeared to have a rather severe sleep talking problem.

As another thunderingly loud babble of nonsense was emitted from the other side of the tent, he opened his eyes, glancing over at the final occupant, who Ni~ya would have been inclined to pronounce dead if it were not for the snores that interrupted the brief silences that were occasionally blessed upon him. He sighed in irritation, lifting his head and slamming it back down; before wincing as it glanced off a stone that was somehow protruding through his pillow. Holding back a scream of aggravation, he staggered up and began fumbling with the zip of the tent, releasing a calming breath as the “door” slumped down smoothly and he was able to step out into the night.

The wind sliced through his clothes like a knife, but it felt refreshingly soothing against his face, numbing away the broiling frustration born from a day toiling up steep, slippery inclines, and furthermore from hours spent erratically chasing his confused emotions around in circles.

He felt his muscles releasing, tension cracking from his bones as he walked away from the sizeable cluster of uniform green tents, welcomed by the patchy darkness that surrounded him, enshrouding him in a natural charge that made him shiver. It felt as if he was the only person in the world, but the thrilling elation that may have enveloped him so recently was a loose, heavy weight on his shoulders, because in such a fleeting amount of time, he had realised what a terrible thing it was to be alone.

But even before he could open his mouth, voice his wishes to the cold, listening night, his wandering gaze discerned a solitary figure vaguely silhouetted against the empty swart air, a figure that made his eyes widen in innate recognition. He moved closer, hesitantly, as if one wrong movement would cause the apparition to fade away.

“…Sakito?”

The seated boy looked up in sudden surprise, before lowering his features self-consciously, mumbling a greeting. At the slight barely-visible flash of his melancholy pensive expression, Ni~ya felt a sudden burst of bravery and knelt beside the dejected form.

“She isn’t worth all this you know-“

“I’m not thinking about Leiko.”

His swift reply was calm, yet it felt like a slash across Ni~ya’s face and his cheeks reddened until the crashing of the wheezing wind drove all colour from his face once more. Tentatively he placed his hand gently against the other’s arm finding it to be clothed beneath a surprisingly thin layer and tense as it stiffened reflexively against his touch, only relaxing when he withdrew.

“What… are you thinking about…?”

A thin smile drew Sakito’s lips upwards cynically, but he did not answer. He shifted his gaze from the empty space where Ni~ya’s arm had stretched between them up into the sky, roaming across the vast open sky.

The darkness was livid, sunk in such nigrescence it seemed as if anything that dared to try and resist it would simply drown in the incomprehensible depths of it, and yet somehow, life was clinging to it. Tiny pinprick lanterns desolately clinging to the inky fabric of life, their grips fastened stolidly in the destitute hope that somehow one of their scattered fellows may tear a path through the heavens, a dashing hero to put a swift end to their long, remote lifestyle. But eventually, their strong holds would always waver, cramped by the arthritic pains of old age, and they would fall, hot and burning with a final resistance before hurtling into nothingness.

A shiver thrilled across his freezing skin and he squeezed his eyes shut, but the stars were still imprinted in his mind. Lonely inanimate beings blessed with a celestial beauty that they could never really share. Infinite possibilities that could never be filled, risks that could never be dared….

“Kiss me.”

Astounded, all Ni~ya could do was stare. Before fear could take a hold of his reactions Sakito lunged forward, capturing the other’s lips with his own.

Ni~ya had not even realised quite what was happening as he responded to the gentle, nervous pressure on his mouth, moving his slender, icy fingertips to grasp Sakito’s slender forearms and feeling them tremble in his grasp as he sank cautiously into the embrace. At the positive response, he felt himself pulled closer to the taller boy until he was pressed close to his body, the only source of warmth in the bitter twilight. He released a shaky sigh and stiffened slightly as he felt Ni~ya’s tongue nudging its way between his slightly parted lips, before relaxing once more as persuasively gentle hands snaked around his waist, tracing his spine and the delicate skin of his sides until he flattened himself into Ni~ya’s form with a barely discernible whimper.

At the sound the kiss deepened, and Sakito reached out desperately to grab a handful of Ni~ya’s clothing as his head reeled with a wildly unfamiliar pleasure. The tender grip, the thin strands of blonde that fell teasingly against his face as their mouths moved in harmony; it worked Sakito’s heart into a frenzy, until his chest was pounding and his blood sang as it raced through his veins, streaked with passion and adrenalin.

Finally, yet all too soon, he felt the other withdraw and he fell against his chest, gulping in a draught of sparklingly fresh air. A feeling of blissful respite swept over his body and his eyes flickered haltingly, lashes trembling as Ni~ya raised his hands, uncertain now in the wake of the moment, his fingers entwining into his hair, brushing by the nape of his neck lightly and following the delicate lines of his cheekbones. And there were a million thoughts tumbling in Sakito’s head, a million words that he needed to share, yet two, only two, that he could express.

“I’m scared.”
