Language Changes Everything

I should start by saying that I'm so very proud of all the couples and individuals in California who have fought the long hard battle to ensure that marriage is a right that all couples can enjoy. It's my hope that one day in my life-time we'll see it across the nation, and that this debate will seem so un-evolved ( Read more... )

Back at home it settled down pretty quickly, so hopefully it will here too.

One thing I think that having the media label it this way right now might do is drive home to people that this is real, and that the world isn't falling apart. Equal marriage is finally happening on a large enough scale that can't be ignored.

I commend to you Anna Quindlen's column in the june 9 newsweek. The last line is essentially the same point you were making, that soon gay marriage won't be a novelty, it'll just be another marriage. I think you oughta cut the world a little slack, though. We're not so far off from exactly what you want, which is for gay marriage to be just marriage. But for now, with these court decisions and all, it IS a novelty. It would be an incomplete news story to characterize it differently. Just give it time.
