Summary: She can be rational when she needs to be.
Warnings: very vague spoilers for the Impossible Astronaut, but I actually wrote most of it before I saw the episode.
Notes: I am amazed and slightly spooked by how well this fits in with The Impossible Astronaut, considering I wrote all but the final paragraph before having watched it. I was aiming to get it posted before the episode aired, but I'm rather pleased with the way things turned out.
The rational part of River’s brain tells her it’s only logical for the Doctor to trust Amy over her. From his point of view, all she’s done lately is avoid questions, whereas she doubts Amy’s ever told him a single lie. She realises that, but it doesn’t make it any easier when it happens. She manages to hold the Doctor’s gaze as he rants at her, but once his eyes are off her, it’s all she can do to keep from letting go and just telling him everything.
It’s at moments like this she wonders why she bothered to get in this deep. Sure, their first few meetings were entirely coincidental, but once she started calling on him... she knew it would get difficult. Time travel is never a simple matter, but she’d liked it that way. Theirs was by far the most interesting relationship she’d ever had.
And the most heartbreaking, says a voice at the back of her mind. Well, true. Of course, she’d known from the beginning that there were other women in the Doctor’s past, and she’d never exactly considered herself to be somehow more special than any of them. Somehow it still hurt every time she met one. Even ones like Amy, happily married and with no interest in the Doctor other than time travelling buddy and the odd flirt here and there.
Even as she thanks Amy for convincing the Doctor where she couldn’t herself, she feels another pang of jealousy. She pushes it away. There are more important things to focus on right now. She can be rational when she needs to be. Even if it is only going to get harder.
