Kate had never thought that going on a date with Richard Castle would feel so weird. They’d known each other for years now, after all, and there had always been the feeling that everything was leading up to this. And yet, she still felt like a nervous school girl getting ready for the prom.
Lanie had approved the blue cocktail dress she was wearing, so she felt she had nothing to worry about in that department. She decided to do very similar make-up to what she usually wore, but for some reason, she felt like she should be making more of an effort, even though she knew it was stupid. Castle had been her partner long enough that he’d seen her at her worst many times, and she knew he still cared about her in spite of all that. Why, then, did she think she would have to impress him tonight?
She finished applying mascara just as the doorbell rang. Smoothing out her dress one more time, she picked up her handbag from where it was lying on the bed, and made her way through the living room. She took a deep breath and pulled the door open to reveal Castle (she made a mental note to start calling him “Rick”, or at least “Richard” if they were going to be dating now) on the other side, holding a bunch of flowers out in front of him. His hand dropped as he took in Kate standing before him. He looked back at the flowers in his hand.
“Well, these now pale in comparison,” he remarked, doing his best to appear disappointed.
“Oh, shut up,” was Kate’s reply, but she smiled at the compliment as she accepted the flowers and walked back into her apartment to find a vase. Castle stayed at the entrance, but took a step inside and leaned on the open door. Kate filled the vase with water and then set the flowers in it, sitting it in the centre of her coffee table. Turning around again, she noticed Castle - Richard - watching her. When he’d first started tailing her, she would have found that creepy. Now, however, she found she quite liked it. There were far worse people who could have their eyes on her.
“Shall we?”
“We shall.” Castle offered his arm as Kate met him back at the door. As she accepted it, she felt her worries from earlier melt away and she lapsed into that comfortable feeling she’d come to associate with being with Castle.
This was how everything was supposed to be.
