8th ❄ [video]

[Claire is peering at the Vine outside the library, looking decidedly confused.]

Something a little strange just happened--yes, I know everything here is strange, but...those creatures in the library. Bears, yes? There's a section of it they're guarding, and they wouldn't let me through before. But today they stood aside...

[Gabrielle looks a bit amused at Claire's general reaction to those kinds of books.]

Usually those sort of things happen when you become of legal age. Did you have a birthday recently?

Legal age? No, my birthday is...

[she trails off, thinking.]

Wait...if I consider how long I've been away from home, it could have gone by without me noticing...! But the dates here don't match up at all, I can't be sure.

The dates didn't really match up with my birthday here either, but if the bears allowed you to pass then it must mean that you're a year older.

Oh my... The Queen certainly has interesting taste in books.

I'll say. They're sort of...very focused on one subject.

I guess having romance and girls on the brain would do that to someone.

The Queen does seem awfully concerned with it, doesn't she? Well, some of the regular poetry books aren't all about love, but those are mostly depressing.

Oh, those kinds of books certainly can be educational. Although often the things they teach you aren't strictly correct.

Well, it's not really the sort of education I was looking for. But what do you mean, not correct?

They tend to pay more attention to what appeals to the author than to what's feasible in reality.

Well, it does seem that people would write something they prefer. Maybe it's best to think of it like a fairy tale, since it's enjoyable even though you know it's not real--

[she covers her mouth when she laughs.]

Oh--I'm sorry. That doesn't really work in this case, does it. Here I am saying such odd things...

Yeah, you don't need those books when you got me.

I got a few ideas I can run by you, Kitty.

[she puts her chin in her hand.]

Really? Do tell.

My first idea is that you're all grown up now. So you can do whatever you want. Think those bears only keep you out if you're a kid.

Grown up? Just like that? Why did they decide such a thing all of a sudden?

Huh... either they loosened up the rules, or you hit whatever age they're holding those off for.

I wouldn't really waste any time in that part of the library.

I'm thinking the second one must be it--I'm not completely sure, but I think my birthday must have passed by now. Eighteen is sort of an arbitrary age, though, isn't it?

I thought there might be something useful there--maybe some cookbooks for once. But no luck.

Well, when people start passing laws on who can do what when, the ages kinda have to be arbitrary.

A place you can only go when you're an adult is gonna be all, well, 'adult' material in a place like this.

I guess that makes sense. My village was so far from the capital that laws weren't exactly enforced much, though.

Is that what it's called, "adult" material? Seems I've learned something new.
