I'm mostly done with this project. There are a few touch ups (some of which were taken care of as soon as I saw the scanned version - I mean, just look at the blob after the Tuum! terrible!) but this is how it turned out, with a quarter for reference purposes.

cut for the people who don't like art. Or me. If so, why do you read this LJ? Look at the picture! It has shiny bits! )

Even so, I look at it and feel accomplished, and then I look at pictures of the real stuff and realize that I am still a beginner.

For gold powder I use Schmincke brand dry powder. Mix a bit with water and gum arabic. I know that Wet Paint, on Grand Ave, has a bottle in their calligraphy section.
I also buy gold leaf there, but they don't have the glue I prefer to use.
You can make your own binder using wood glue or gesso and other chemicals, but then you have to sand the glue after it dries. I use Kolner brand miniatum for gold leaf. It is easy to apply and dries with a smooth finish. Wet Paint used to carry miniatum, but they stopped. I order mine from John Neal Booksellers http://www.johnnealbooks.com/ Their catalog has everything you will ever need for C&I and is very dangerous to anyone's paycheck. :)
If you ever want to try any of these things out before you buy, I'd be happy to show them off.
