Two minutes to the end of the third period, they’re up by three, and the home team’s fans are already walking out of the stands.
Walt can hear Ray talking shit as the right winger skates up to position; can see the swagger in the cant of Ray’s hips and knows he’s got that shit-eating grin pointed at the other team’s lineup.
“-- too busy staring in awe at how I handle my stick to watch the goddamn puck, it’s all right, I don’t judge, man; happens to everyone when RayRay hits the ice--”
At least it’s nothing too horribly offensive this time. Ray’s gotten a couple warnings about his mouth this season. Walt tunes out, eyes on the LT, staying focused because he’s still second string defense and he needs to make his ice time count.
But they’re on tonight and this game’s over, they’re just padding stats at this point. The other team’s frustrated, starting to get sloppy and aggressive as the fans boo and the stands empty, moves this side of dangerous as they play like it’s already the post-season

Walt’s the only one besides Brad that can say that to Ray and have him listen immediately when Walt means it. Ray snaps his mouth shut and watches Walt with knowing eyes
