51. the veins of history

anassa_anemou requested a tutorial for this icon:

->

To start with, the original screencap had something covering up the bottom portion of Hathaway (the man on the right). Because I wanted a full body icon, I first had to create Hathaway's legs. I did that by using the clone and smudge tools to remove the obstacle.

->

1. Duplicate the background layer and screen (50%)

2. Selective coloring layer to bring out the greens + reds, and lower the intensity of the black part in the right-hand side

3. More coloring to make the greens and reds brighter and to lower the coloring of the light-colored brick behind the two men

4. Vibrance layer to bring these colors out even further

5. I thought the icon looked too boring. I add yellow and red to the grass and made the stone wall more yellow than red, which I realized made it work better. I also intensified the greens more

6. At this point I lowered the color intensity of the overall icon (with a soft light layer and tweaking the selective coloring)

7. Then I upped the vibrance again. I found that by lowering the color intensity, there's less noise/bleed/etc. when I make the icon as vibrant as I'd like it to be

8. I copy+merged all the layers into a new layer on top. Zooming in by 200-300%, I cleaned up the icon -- such as the dark outline around Hathaway, the over-sharpness of the bench on the left, some excess grass I didn't want, etc. (For all the areas that were cleaned up see the middle image)

9. Sharpened the icon. I just use filter/sharpen and then mask out the areas that become too sharpened

10. Normally, I would be done, but the colors were just too overwhelming. So I added some white light "blobs" around the edges
