I'm supposed to be a professional now. How does that work?

So I've been poking around craigslist looking for art type gigs and stuff and generally having zero luck until someone finally answered one of my e-mails in a group message to everyone who replied. I'm pretty sure they wanted illustrations for a children's book.

Hi, I guess I needed to be more specific when I placed my ad. I already have offers ( Read more... )

i fail, work?, illustration, halp, craigslist

Well, here are some pros and cons:

The Cons:
  • You'll probably be working as free labor. If there is pay, it's uncertain.
  • You currently don't know the details of the book and what kind of illustrations are required. If it's long, obviously you'll have to read it, which will take time.
  • There might still be other people in the group who want in on this opportunity, meaning competition.

The pros:

  • You'd be published, and your name would be out there on something.
  • You might get paid after all. :D

I think I have issues actually coming up with what to tell people when I'm working with them...I'm afraid of being too honest with my concerns and saying something that will turn them right off and throw me far away from their consideration. x_x I can't act like I know what I'm doing when I really have no idea!

I really want to put that whole book on dA in a scrolling flash presentation or something so the actual illustrations are more visible, but I'm really bad with that sort of thing. D: I was barely able to manage putting together a slideshow the other day! I might need to find someone else to do it for me.

Edit: And now one of my friends who was an upperclassman is telling me the opposite thing on facebook...man, this just confuses me further. D: I'm trying to write an e-mail now anyway, though I'm afraid it might come off wrong somehow. Waaaah. T_T

Go with your gut. I hope I'm not confusing you even more and making things worse! ;_; What's worked for me when considering taking on a project is to sit back and let them talk and talk and talk and just as questions. This way you get tons of information before formulating real opinions (and it lowers the risk of saying something that might be embarrassing if they just answer your question ( ... )

Nah, I'm just easily confused and intimidated. But I just sent an e-mail, and hopefully did not sound like a complete loser and/or snob, or confuse the other person. Haha, I suck at this.

Ewwww powerpoint. :( The last time I tried to use that for a presentation for a class I got fed up and just made a pdf in indesign instead. But that book needs to do things that I'm pretty sure powerpoint can't. Both sides are continuous illustrations, so I want the transition between spreads to be panning over like a scroll. It sounds easy in theory, but looking at actionscript hurts my brain. :D
